The title ‘Quantity Surveyor’ raises many questions among students. Is it to do with math, statistics or engineering? Students often are left confused and don’t actually know who is a Quantity Surveyor. Well, a Quantity Surveyor in basic terms is just a construction industry professional who is highly knowledgeable about construction costs and contracts. This may seem like a small responsibility, but there’s a lot more to it.

What is a Quantity Surveyor?

Quantity Surveyors are basically Construction Cost Consultants, they are responsible for estimating, monitoring construction costs and overseeing all budgets relating to building and civil engineering projects. The aim of Quantity Surveyor is to minimize project costs and improve value for money while still meeting the required standards and quality. This includes ensuring compliance with statutory building rules. Quantity Surveyor will prepare estimates and cost of the work and will track any contract changes that may have an impact on costs and create reports to show profitability when the project is underway.

Entry Requirements to Study Quantity Surveying in Malaysia

Diploma in Quantity Surveying (2.5 years)

  • SPM/O-Level: Minimum get 3Cs including Mathematics, and must pass in Malay and English subjects.

Degree in Quantity Surveying (3 years/3.5years)

  • STPM: Minimum of 2Cs; or
  • A-Level: Minimum of 2Ds; or
  • UEC: Minimum of 5Bs including Mathematics
  • Australian Matriculation: minimum of ATAR 70.0; or
  • Foundation in Arts of Science: Minimum CGPA 2.00; or
  • Diploma in Quantity Surveying: Minimum CGPA of 2.00
