More than often, when it comes to difficult times and heavy weight on the shoulder, people struggle to see the end of it. Not everyone has the ability to cope with major changes and tragic events, especially when life has always been smooth sailing. 

No matter how organised and planned out a person is, there will always be certain things that we are unable to foresee — a pandemic is one of them.

To be faced with an unexpected life-changing crisis as critical as the Coronavirus, COVID-19  is never in one’s prediction and will never be an easy point in everybody’s lives. As much as we try to instill optimism in our brains and lead ourselves into a better state of mind, it’s okay to know that we would sometimes stumble along the way, simply because a human’s mind is filled with both optimism and pessimism; the only difference is in the way we balance them out necessarily.

When we are faced with a seemingly endless rainy season, what do we do when the rain doesn’t stop when it’s supposed to? 

  1. We pray; we pray for the things that we don’t have control over.
  2. We adjust; we adjust ourselves to the season to survive.
  3. And the most important yet the hardest thing to do, we hope; we never stop hoping for nothing but a better season.

Easier said than done, here are the simple ways to help you continue to see the good in the bad times;

1. Practice self-care

I believe at this point everyone can agree that taking care of ourselves seems to be pretty much the heaviest task for us, being cooped up in our house and not going out leads to appearance abandonment. Staying at home in pajamas without breaking a sweat or meeting other people, is self-care necessary? 

When was the last time you slept on time, took a refreshing shower, pampered yourself with extensive care and felt really good about yourself? You need that.

Sleep

A good place to start is your sleeping pattern. It’s important to realise that the key to feeling good for the day is having a good amount of sleep during the night. We have been dragging our sleeps for the sake of Netflix, Youtube and social media most of the time during the period of staying at home. 

Sleeping at 3 am and waking up at 12 pm is not normal and definitely bad for your body. Fix that first, make your sleeping pattern return to normal and see the difference of energy you emit in the morning.

Body and skin care

Who doesn’t love body care and skin care session time of the day? Normally, we tend to forget and procrastinate because of our inability to spare the time to properly do the daily routine. 

What else could be in the way now that we spend all of our time at our house? It’s the perfect opportunity to get back on the track and take a good care of our skin to feel clean and beautiful, even indoors.

Working out

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. A healthy body leads to a healthy mind. 

For sure, many of us have been neglecting our need to work our body out now that we are locked inside our house. I know, the bed looks better and comfier. But you need to stop saying “I’ll start tomorrow.” everyday just because you know you have all the time you need to get started again. Why not today?

2. Spend good times with your family

Family is the never-changing pillar for us to get back up again when we are faced with hardships. Some of us are blessed to be around our family during the crisis, and some of us are unable to go back to our family due to the restriction and time limit. 

But family is always a family, distance and obstacles don’t mean a thing when you realise the importance of being together (physically and mentally) when things get difficult. Do these activities virtually if you’re away from your family! Family time is always worth the effort.

Cook together

Cooking never feels wrong when you do it together with your family. You can be cooking the simplest dish in the world, having your family beside you will always make it better. Take this time to spend more time with your family and you will be surprised to learn new things about your family that you probably never know of.

Game night

You can play as many games as you want with your family, you will experience being alive and content more than ever the moment you get to laugh and share the joy together with your family. 

People say games are the best ice breaker when it comes to strangers — I believe game night with your family is the best way to strengthen your family bond.

Movie night

Do I need to explain more? Remember the days when we gathered together at the living room, with a lot of snacks, just excited to watch a movie with our families? We all miss that. 

Those days are irreplaceable and they always bring back the feeling of genuine happiness. So pick one good movie tonight and enjoy it with your family, like old times. I promise you will not regret it.

3. Create new fun with your friends

In the midst of hard times, having companies helps a lot. For some people, it might have been harder to maintain the friendship now that you are not allowed to meet outside and go on fun adventures like you used to; you’re missing the adrenaline rush when you’re having good times with your group of friends.

You are feeling down and your friends are feeling down. Keeping in touch with your friends is becoming more difficult because you have realised how much effort it takes to check up on your friends in the middle of the crisis — the more reason why we should fight together.

It’s exhausting to deal with the crisis alone, so get together with your friends to embark on this journey of sustaining our hope for better days.

We have been way too occupied with work and school that we sometimes left out what is really meaningful in our lives. We might have been putting aside the people that we cherish the most. This can be the time for us to open a new book and start a good new chapter of our lives. Get in touch with your old friends and take this opportunity to catch up with them.

Who says you can’t have parties with your friends like you usually do? Get creative and make the most of the technology to stay connected more than ever at times like this. 

This is the 21st century. You might be locked up inside your house but you can still get dressed and dolled up like you would if you were to attend a party — and have one for real, online! Say no to mass gathering and start finding new ways to have fun with your friends online!

4. Focus on your career direction

The downfall of the economy because of the crisis is something that we have no control over. A lot of people are struggling to make ends meet because of the increased rate of unemployment in the past few months. Some lost their jobs, some lost their source of income, and all of us are trying our best to survive. The pandemic is teaching us one lesson of all the things; bad days happen, it’s just a matter of time. Facing the problem is always a better solution than avoiding it. And right now, what matters is what we are doing to handle it. 

Working from home

A huge number of employees started working from home ever since the crisis occurred. As exhausting and boring as it can be, we should see beyond the difficulties and acknowledge the benefits it brings without us realising. Working from home pretty much requires a lot more effort than the usual routine of working from the office. 

Meaning to say, you have unknowingly acquired these skills during the period of quarantine:

  • Self-discipline
  • Consistency
  • Time management

Not bad of a skill, right?

Career Planning

For people who lost their jobs and their financial income in the past months, it’s helpful to see the bigger picture of the current situation and think of the matters that you can take into hands for you to continue moving forward, passing the crisis. 

The impact of the coronavirus on the economy simply shows us the path for a better future in terms of career to pursue. It’s no surprise to see a change of career demand in the next five years, so fill in this time to look into it and choose your next career wisely. It doesn’t hurt to do research beforehand.

5. Be your own teacher

The COVID-19 had the most impact on the education system. Students and lecturers are currently trying their hardest to continue receiving and providing education from online platforms. It has not been an easy journey and it took a long time for the society to be familiar with the improvised education system. Fortunately, education remains accessible and flexible even in the middle of a crisis.

Online studying

I get it, it’s difficult and everything feels new and foreign to suddenly start attending classes online, doing exams online and carrying out assignments and group projects online. That’s a lot to take in, especially considering the amount of time given to the students to learn and be familiar with the current education system. 

But trust me, it gives you more than what the crisis can possibly take away from you. In no time, you will not hear any lecturer nag at you about your assignment, you’ll hear your own voice instead nagging at yourself to finish the assignment and submit it on time. This is the best time for many people because they are able to try new things and resume all their past hobbies during this quarantine. Some read books while some start writing a book during this period. There are so many trending activities that you can do while quarantine. But before that, it is best for us to stay knowledgeable about Covid-19 virus and all the related terms.

What are the meaning of these terms?

World Health Organisation (WHO)

Started in the year 1948, WHO primary role is to direct and coordinate international health within the United Nations system. Coronavirus

The virus has the form of a crown and crown means corona in Latin, thus the name. WHO declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on 30 January 2020.

Covid-19

Previously known as 2019-nCoV. CoV was the family virus name, 19 was the short form for the year of discovery which is in 2019. Covid-19 is another name for Coronavirus. 

Epidemic

Rapid spread of disease to a large number of people within a community, population or region.

Pandemic

This is a global epidemic where the spread happens in many countries. WHO declared a pandemic on 11 March 2020. 

Isolation

Separating the ill person from those who are healthy.

Social Distancing

This is a form of containment that has been strongly advised by WHO and governments around the world. Not only that, you need to avoid direct contact with people or objects in public places. This is to minimize exposure and reduce the Covid-19 transmission. However, WHO is moving away from this term and wants to refer to it as physical distancing.

As much as we are hoping that the pandemic will end soon, we as a community need to be dedicated in contributing to our respective country by implementing self-quarantine and social distancing as well as taking care of our hygiene and our bodies properly. Instead of reacting negatively to the situation, it’s time to adapt and make use of the time that we probably will not get again. Keep in check with your health and stay updated with the current statistics of the pandemic.

Health

The Coronavirus spreads primarily through droplets generated when an infected person coughs or sneezes, or through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose. Hence it is compulsory for people who have the flu and dry throat to keep the face mask on. Washing hands frequently is also one of the ways to avoid from the virus to stay on the surface of your hands.

  1. Wash your hands frequently using soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. 
  2. Cover your mouth and nose with your elbow or tissue when coughing or sneezing. 
  3. Avoid close contact with anyone who has the symptoms.
  4. Seek medical care as soon as possible if you have the symptoms.
  1. Don’t hold or attend large meetings.
  2. Be extra cautious of public properties.
  3. Avoid rush hour and crowded places.
  4. Cancel or delay activities that involve close interaction.
  5. Don’t get too close to others.
  6. Stay at home as much as possible.

Usually it will take around 1 to 14 days before developing symptoms. The most common symptoms of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) are fever, tiredness, and dry cough. 80% of people recover from the disease without needing special treatment. In rare cases, the disease can be serious and even fatal particularly for older people, and people with other medical conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease), may be more vulnerable to becoming severely ill.

The symptoms include;

  • cough
  • fever
  • tiredness
  • difficulty breathing (severe cases)

If you noticed that you have been experiencing mild symptoms, stay at home until you’ve fully recovered. The symptoms can be relieved by frequently:

  • rest and sleep
  • keep warm
  • drink plenty of liquids
  • use a room humidifier or take a hot shower to help ease a sore throat and cough

However if you develop a fever, cough, and find it difficult to breath, immediately seek medical care. Call in advance and tell your health provider of any recent travel or recent contact with travelers.

Education

For questions about your start dates, attendance, fee matters and other issues relating to your study, you should contact your education provider. If classes at your education provider have commenced and you are in a period of self-quarantine, you should inform your lecturer or student services contact officer of your circumstances to determine whether alternate arrangements for remote learning can be temporarily put in place.

If you are not able to return to Australia in time for the start of your classes, you should inform your lecturer or student services contact officer of your circumstances to determine whether alternate arrangements, such as for remote learning, can be temporarily put in place.

Year 11 and 12 international students who are found suitable to enter Australia under the recent changes must meet the quarantine requirements set out by the state and territory health authorities, including self-quarantine for 14 days at their destination. Students should regularly contact their education provider to ensure they are up to date with class content.

If you have taken out travel or other insurance, you should discuss this with your insurance provider. If you are not able to return to Australia in time for the start of your classes, you should inform your lecturer or student services contact officer of your circumstances and discuss with them how your course fees will be affected.

Financial

Students are encouraged to rely on family support, part-time jobs available and their own savings to sustain themselves in Australia. As part of their visa application, international students have had to demonstrate that they can support themselves completely in their first year. Students who have been here longer than 12 months who find themselves in financial hardship will be able to access their Australian superannuation.

Work

If you have a part time job that you cannot attend while in self-quarantine or unable to travel, you should contact your employer, advise them of your circumstances and your compliance with advice from the Department of Health.

International students are able to work up to 40 hours per fortnight. International students working in aged care and as nurses have had these hours extended to support these critical sectors. Additionally, international students working in the major supermarkets had also had these hours extended to help get stock on shelves during the high demand. From 1 May, their hours will return to the maximum 40 hours a fortnight as more Australians are being recruited into these roles.

Travel

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has updated its travel advice to all international destinations as “level 4 – do not travel overseas at this time.” In line with the World Health Organization (WHO) declaration of COVID-19 as a pandemic, DFAT now advises all Australians: do not travel at this time. Regardless of your destination, age or health, do not travel at this time.

How to Remain Healthy During Covid-19 Quarantine

It is easy to be slacking throughout this self-quarantine period. This is the period where you can sleep without looking at the time or care about how many hours you sleep. However, you must take care of your health during this chaotic time. You do not want to fall sick and worry your loved ones, not especially during the outbreak of Covid-19.

As the famous American essayist, Ralph Waldo Emmerson once said, health is your first wealth. You do not want to take your body for granted because of your young age but to value your health and start taking care of your body. During this Covid-19 period, there are things that we can do to make sure our body is in the healthiest state.

1. Workout at Home

No more excuses saying “I’m busy” or “I have no time”. You have the time in the world to move that body because of this quarantine period. It is essential for you to sweat it out, not just because you will lose weight but also for the benefits of your important organs such as the heart and brain. Your heart will benefit the most because working out will stimulate the growth of new blood vessels and thus, lowering blood pressure. Not just that, your brain releases neurotransmitters such as serotonin and endorphins, making you feel good after the workout. There are 4 types of exercise to strengthen your health. 

Flexibility

Strength

Strength exercises make your muscles stronger and allow you to carry out daily heavy activities. Normally, you can use dumbbells or resistance bands during the workout. Balance

This exercise helps prevent falls which is a common problem for clumsy people and older adults. You can definitely improve your balance by doing the famous Tai Chi exercises so go ahead and follow Dr. Peter Chen’s website and follow his youtube videos.

Endurance

Usually known as aerobic or cardio exercise, it can improve your breathing and heart rate. If you love dancing, this is the perfect exercise for you. Follow the Live Love Party’s youtube to maximize your dancing experience because they will teach you how to zumba.

2. Get Enough Sleep

As cliche as it sounds, you must get enough sleep in a day. Experts from John Hopkins Medicine said lack of sleep at night time risks your health because it will increase symptoms of depression, migraines and high blood pressure. According to the National Sleep Foundation, the recommended sleeping hours are:

  • teenagers (14-17 years) 8-10 hours of sleep 
  • adults (18-64 years) 7-9 hours of sleep.

So do not binge on Netflix so much so you lose your night time sleep.

3. Eat Healthy

It is easy to get lazy and eat instant noodles during this quarantine period. But please drop that crips, soda and slow down on the fried food. Like the famous saying goes, “You are what you eat”. Increasing your daily intake on veggies and fruits will help to strengthen your immune system. This is crucial as there are no vaccines yet for Covid-19. For the past few months, our beloved mother Earth has suffered a lot. From the massive bushfire in Australia, killing ⅓ of koalas to the pandemic outbreak of Novel Coronavirus (Covid19), killing 54, 229 people (to date) globally.

Although there is nothing much we can do to prevent it, we as the citizens of Earth can at least contribute something to take care of this planet with the 5 ways below.

5 Ways To Save Our Earth

1. Drive Less, Commute More

Research has shown that due to the Corona lockdown around the world, air pollution has dropped significantly. Professor James Lee from the York University and the National Centre for Atmospheric Science stated “The air is definitely much happier now”. Study showed that nitrogen dioxide levels in many UK cities have greatly reduced because many people stay at home and do not go outside and drive. Therefore, we can take this as a great lesson to start to use public transportation to universities or working places to help in reducing air pollution and save our beloved Earth.

  2. 3R - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle

This famous slogan should be practised. Sadly, not many people make this catchy slogan as their way of life. According to World Waste Facts, every year human dump a massive 2.12 billions tons of waste #CRAZY We, the millennial generations need to be united and combat this issue. We must practise 3Rs and make it as our routine in life for the sake of our mother Earth.

3. Volunteer

Volunteer to the local community to start cleaning the public park, playground or even the beaches. If there is no community to volunteer, start one as soon as possible. Let us pick up all the rubbish and waste that is destroying the beauty of our beaches. Our beaches need us!

4. Shop wisely

It takes 1000 years to decompose one plastic bag. With more than 7 billions people living on this planet and if all of us use one plastic bag in just one day, how many years will it take to decompose all those bags? The answer will be billions of years! Consequently, we must use paper bags or biodegradable plastic bags as it is more environmentally friendly.

5. Education

The famous saying goes, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime”. Education is a powerful tool that can determine the future of our mother Earth. Therefore, it is best for us to be educated on how to help our Earth so not only it can save this planet for a long time but we are able to pass down the knowledge to our future generations too.That is why more and more universities in Australia offer Sustainable Development course and courses that related to environment because they know the importance of knowledge to safeguard our one and only planet. Therefore, students that are motivated to care about our planet, I have a few Australian university recommendations that offer courses related to environment and sustainable development.

With these 5 ways, we are able to contribute back to our planet and do our part as the citizens of Earth. 

What is Sustainable Development?

Sustainable Development according to Brundtland Report is “Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” 

Oftenly, development is driven by one particular need, without fully considering the wider and future impacts. This approach has damaged and changed our global climate. The longer we continue unsustainable development, the more severe its consequences are likely to become. 

However, the focus of sustainable development is not just about the environment. It is also about ensuring a strong, healthy and just society. This can be done by meeting the diverse needs of all people in existing and future communities, promoting personal wellbeing, social cohesion and creating equal opportunity.

We need to preserve our Earth, natural resources and her people for our future generations.

There are 17 Sustainable Development Goals that all United Nations members are working to achieve by 2030. These goals provide a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet Earth, now and into the future. Our part is to help even in our smallest contribution to make these goals a reality.
