For the psychologist in you :

1. Girl Interrupted

Starring Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie, Girl Interrupted is a 1999 American psychological drama film based on a memoir where the film follows a young woman who struggles with the uncertainty of her own mental illness. Set in the 1960’s where mental illness is a highly taboo topic – The protagonist of the film admits herself into a psychiatric institution after getting persuaded by her parents, tand is later diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. This film takes an interesting plot as it argues that perfectly sane people become institutionalized simply because once they’re inside the system, it is assumed that something HAS to be wrong.

2. Split

One of my personal favourites – SPLIT follows a storyline of how a man with 24 different personalities otherwise known as Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) kidnaps and imprisons three teenage girls in an isolated underground facility. The protagonist of the film had identified 23 distinct personalities by his therapist that were formed due to childhood abuse and abandonment, each possessing their own set of peculiarities. This film is definitely one of those films that leave you at the edge of your seat with your mouth wide open as James McAvoy does a brilliant job in playing the different personalities that makes you believe you’re watching 24 different individuals.

For the lawyer in you :

1. 13th

This powerful American documentary film directed by Ava DuVernay thoroughly explores the prison system and how it is used as a weapon against minorities. This film was titled after the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution which abolished slavery and ended involuntary servitude. This documentary shines light on the harsh reality as it explores the raw demonization of minorities for decades to serve political ends, fear of minorities by white and the act of police brutality against minorities. Just a disclaimer though, this film previcts provocative and heartbreakingly real stories so be sure you are mature enough to handle it.

2. The Trial of the Chicago 7

If you’ve been keeping up with pop culture, you MUST have heard of this film and it’s impact as a conversation starter. The Trial of the Chicago 7 follows the Chicago Seven, a group of anti-Vietnam War protestors charged with conspiracy and crossing state lines with the intention of inciting riots. The trial transfixed the nation and sparked a conversation about mayhem intended to undermine the U.S. government. Watch as this suspenseful and intense film as it shows alot of the political system of U.S 50 years ago and now.

How to become a Lawyer in Malaysia?

Sharing is caring :)

Who is a Lawyer?

Typically, lawyers represent clients in civil or criminal trials and present evidence for their defense. However, on a wider scope; they also advise their clients on their legal rights or obligations and counsel them on the best way to proceed according to their legal circumstances.

Other than that, lawyers also carry out research on legal issues and draw up legal documents (wills, deeds, contracts, lawsuits and appeals) — they are qualified to interpret laws, regulations, and rulings.

A lawyer can specialize in many different areas of this profession depending whether it is a public or private law —

Public law (issues that affect the general public or states)

  • Administrative law
  • Constitutional law
  • Criminal law
  • Municipal law
  • International law

Private law (related to the rights and obligations of individuals, families, businesses and small groups )

  • Contract law
  • Tort law
  • Property law
  • Succession law
  • Family law

How to become a Lawyer in Malaysia?

As mentioned by the majority of lawyers and law graduates, becoming a lawyer is definitely not an easy and smooth journey. Here’s the walkthrough of the pathway —

1.Meet the SPM pre-requisite requirements

SPM requirements: Minimum 5Cs

2. Enroll in a recognised Pre-University/Year 12 equivalent program

The best options for you to pursue a law degree in Malaysia will be a recognised Foundation, STPM, A-Levels, IB and UEC.

3. Graduate with a law degree from an approved university

Most importantly, in taking a law degree, you need to verify that the law degree course is approved by the Legal Profession Qualifying Board Malaysia, or by the Malaysia Bar. Failure to graduate from an approved program will prohibit you from applying to take the Malaysian Bar examinations.

4. Complete a Certificate in Legal Practice (CLP) or Bar Professional Training Course

(BPTC) CLP is known as the Malaysian bar examination; you are only allowed a maximum of 4 attempts at the CLP. Alternatively, BPTC (or previously known as BVC) is a popular option for most Malaysians due to its excellent reputation and job prospects — it is a vocational training course in Europe that law graduates take to be admitted as barristers in England and Wales that can also be admitted as an advocate and solicitor not only in Malaysia but also any commonwealth countries. Passing either one is mandatory to be called to the Bar.

Take note:  some universities are exempted from CLP.

5. Undergo Pupillage (known as “Chambering”)

This is a practical training course that lasts nine months. Graduates who are exempted from the CLP may start their pupillage immediately after their degree. During the training period, you will be required to pass all Malaysian Bar examinations and legal aid programs. Upon completion, graduates will be called to the Bar as a fully-qualified lawyer and are allowed to practice independently.
