Ever thought of creating your own website? Always dreamt of building the next best thing for social media that could rival against Facebook or Instagram?
Computer science might just be the right course for you!
But first, don’t get yourself confused between computer science and information technology! These two courses get mixed up a lot for being very similar, but they both require a slightly different set of skills and little did you know, they each appeal to somehow different kind of people as well.
.
Information Technology (IT) itself is more on the computer hardware than the software which requires installing, organizing and maintaining the computer system as well as designing, operating networks and databases.
Computer science focus is entirely on the software of the computer where it’s priority is on the efficiency of programming computers using mathematical algorithms. It is not necessarily required to have a computer science degree if you’re interested in IT than computer science! Careers in IT are typically in a business environment whereby you install internal networks and computer systems and perhaps even programming!
Having a degree in computer science gives you a wider range of opportunities ranging from business to video game design companies.
RECAP : In case you’re still confused about the differences…
- Information Technology focuses on the approach and the application of computing technology (especially in businesses and organisations)
- Computer Science prioritize on mathematical and theoretical foundations of computing ( in simpler terms: programming software)
As you know it, technology has been advancing rapidly at such quick paced that computer science has now become a necessity in today’s world. Without it, transportation isn’t how it is now neither would how our electronic devices are as today!
Hence, the demand of graduates from computer science courses has been in high demand as there are various fields of study in computer science.
What Are The Various Fields in Computer Science?
Artificial Intelligence (AI) | Allowing computers/technology the ability to think, perceive the environment, decision making and action taking. |
Computer Security | Security for devices and network (including the internet) |
Software Engineering | Design and develop software systems with the combination of computer science and engineering. |
Computer Network | Data communications and networking technology skills to design, install, configure and maintain network systems. |
In computer science, it offers a foundation for graduates to adapt to new technologies and ideas which falls into 3 categories:
- Designing and building software
- Develop effective ways to solve computing problems such as:
- Storing information in databases
- Sending data over networks
- Providing new approaches to security problems
- Devising new and improved ways of using computers
- Addressing particular challenges in areas such as:
- Robotics
- Computer vision
- Digital forensics
(Specialisations programmes are not available in all computer science programs)
How is the Education Pathway like if you want to study Computer Science?
- SPM/O-Level
- Minimum: 5 credits, includes a credit in Mathematics.
- Pre-University (1 -2 years)
- A-Level: Minimum of 2Es
- STPM: Minimum of 2Cs (including Mathematics)
- Canadian Pre-University: At least an average of 55%
- Foundation in Science or IT: CGPA of 2.0 / Average of 60%
(depending on the university)
- Degree (3 years)
IMPORTANT! Mathematics is a very important key when it comes to Computer Science. In other words, having a good grade in Mathematics in SPM and Pr-University is key! |
Entry requirements may vary depending on university! Please make sure you do your research on the University of choice!
Now, it comes down to this…
