What is Law?

First order of business, or in this case legalities, is to understand what Law is – Law is a discipline or field relating to rules of a community which may be enforced by authorities. Law regulates and binds members of society to these sets of rules for the sake of preserving moral conduct and principles.

The Law of a country sets a standard or a yardstick which defines acceptable or unacceptable behaviours as well as the appropriate consequences to them. Law exists to upload justice, safety, rights, and peace.

Law can be classified into many categories including Criminal Law, Contract Law, Tort Law, Family Law, Elderly Law, among many others. Law encompasses every aspect of human lives. As such, Law students will explore these notions to acquire breadth and depth of legal knowledge and skills.

General Pathway of a Lawyer in Malaysia

The first step in becoming a lawyer in Malaysia is by completing a recognised pre-university programme after your SPM or any other equivalent examinations.

After 1-2 years in a recognised pre-university programme, you can proceed with the second step.

The second step in becoming a lawyer in Malaysia is to enrol and complete a Law undergraduate degree which is accredited by the Legal Profession Qualifying Board (LPQB) Malaysia. In Malaysia, you will find Law undergraduate degrees for a typical duration of either 3 or 4 years.

The main difference between these two options for the Law undergraduate degree is the necessity of taking up the Certificate in Legal Practice (CLP) or the course structure of the programme which includes a Law professional practice.

After completion of your chosen Law undergraduate degree, you can either proceed with the third step or the fourth step.

The third step in becoming a lawyer in Malaysia is to proceed with the Certificate in Legal Practice (CLP) or the Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC). Read this article to learn more about their differences or contact one of our consultants

The fourth step, after completing the CLP or BPTC, you should proceed with chambering which is also known as pupillage. The duration would take up to 9 months in East Malaysia and 12 months in West Malaysia.

Upon completion of your chambering or pupillage, you will undergo a long call waiting to be admitted by the bar and being granted a legal licence, which marks the completion of your journey in becoming a qualified Lawyer in Malaysia.
