An accord is known as an agreement or concurrence of opinions.
Washington Accord is known as an international agreement signed between engineering bodies who are responsible for accrediting engineering courses in their representative countries. These engineering bodies play a role in ensuring the standards of engineering education are met. Washington Accord acts to create a standardized quality of graduate engineers worldwide to ease the mobility of professional engineers, for them to gain professional registration in other countries to increase employability without having to undergo further formal education. Acquiring a qualification that is recognized by the Washington Accord directly means your qualification is internationally recognised.
All 3 Accreditation bodies: Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM), Engineers Australia (EU) and Engineering Council United Kingdom (ECUK) are all signatories under the Washington Accord!
Malaysia is a signatory of the Washington Accord. Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) represents Washington Accord in the accreditation of Engineering programmes in both local and private universities in Malaysia, to ensure it is satisfying the academic requirements for the practice of engineering professionally. In simple words, if your Engineering program is accredited by the Board of Engineers Malaysia, it is also accredited by the Washington Accord. This accreditation ensures that graduates from these programs will have the opportunity to register as Graduate Engineers in other countries as well without needing to re-qualify! Other countries who are signatories under the Washington Accord are such as Australia, Canada, China, Japan, Korea, Ireland,Singapore, United States, The United Kingdom and many more!
