What is Anthropology?
Anthropology is the scientific study of humans, human behaviour, and societies in the past and present. The goal of anthropology is to understand the human evolutionary origins and the great diversity of social existence in the world. There are 4 major fields in Anthropology which will be explained in detail below:
Archaeology Anthropology
This field studies the prehistory and early history of societies. This is to understand the technical, social, and political organization of the past systems. The archaeological record consists of artifacts, biofacts, or even ecofacts.
Biological Anthropology
This field studies the aspects of human and near-human evolution. Near-human refers to monkeys, apes, and other primates. This field also examines fossils and applies their observations to understanding the roots of human behaviour.
Cultural Anthropology
This field focuses on the cultural aspects of human societies all over the world. Their research is mostly on social and political organizations, marriage patterns and kinship systems, subsistence and economic patterns, and religious beliefs of different human societies.
Linguistic Anthropology
This study of the human communication process and focuses their research on understanding things such as the physiology of speech, the structure and function of languages, social and cultural influences on speech and writing, how languages developed over time and how they differ from each other.
