What Does an Immunologist Do?

An immunologist basically deals with the problems related to the immune system such as allergies, asthma and autoimmune diseases. Immunologists study and analyse the functions of the immune system, environmental factors affecting its function, how immune system disorders occur, and how such diseases can be treated. Immunologists may work either in the laboratory, conducting research or directly work with patients in the healthcare field.

Investments are made with the hope for potential gains in the future- there is always a certain level of risk attached to it. An investment may not generate any income, or even end up losing value over time.

  2. Calculate the stock’s price-to-earnings ratio
  3. Compare the results with the average price-to-earnings ratio (approx. 15). If the results exceed or severely miss the price-to-earnings ratio, it could be an indicator that the stock is either priced too high or too low- which calls for further investigation

2. Balance Sheet/ Financial Statements

  1. Look at the company’s most recent financial statements and quarterly reports to determine if they are profitable
  2. Compare profitability, sales and market share with other companies in the same industry and see if they have a competitive edge- which often makes for good investments
  3. Identify economic risks common to the industry. Assess how these conditions could affect short-run and long-run returns on investment

3. Bonds

  1. Identify the return % on the bond (use an investment calculator) and compare yielding results with other bonds to see if you stand to receive a fair return
  2. Categorise potential bonds into investment grade and non-investment grade: investment grade bonds are more reliable (the lower it ranks, the better) while the latter pays higher yields but carries the threat of default
  3. Figure out the time frame in which you want to start earning your gains, and see if it matches up to your investment timeline. Some bonds mature in a matter of years, while others might take decades

1. Your Financial Advisor Stands to Gain a Big Commission

Financial Investors are not legally required to act in your best interest, and more often than not, when they are working on a commission basis, they will prioritise their interests over yours. They may recommend investments that do not match what you are looking for, if they stand to earn money from your buying it. If they charge you commissions up front, your advisor has no incentive to provide you with the best incentive regarding your investment, so avoid those as well. 

2. Everyone is Buying It

Following the herd and investing in what’s most “hot” at the moment might not be the best idea- these stocks are prone to rise quickly, but they often fall just as quickly too. While many want to get rich quick, jumping on the latest bandwagon might not work out for you, or it just might.

What is Animation?

Animation is designing, drawing, making layouts, and preparing photographic sequences that are integrated with multimedia.  Animation involves the exploitation and management of still images to generate the illusion of movement. A person who creates animations is called an animator. Animators use various computer technologies to capture the still images and animate them in the desired sequence.

Types of Animations

Traditional Animation: Traditional animation can also be referred to as cell animation. It requires the animator to draw every single frame by hand to create an animated scene.

2D Animation: 2D animation refers to vector-based animations similar to the ones used in Flash. Vector-based animation gives the artist the option to create rigs for the characters and move single body parts at a time rather than continually redrawing the characters.

3D Animation: 3D animation is also known as computer animation, and it is currently the most commonly used form of animation. 3D animation has less to do with drawing and more to do with moving a character in a program. 

Motion Graphics: This art form focuses on moving graphic elements, shapes, and text. This process is commonly used for things like television promotions, explainer videos, and animated logos. 

Stop Motion: Stop motion animation is very similar to traditional animation because it combines a series of still images that are slightly different to show movement. The largest difference is that stop motion uses photography and captures real objects. The artist repeats this process until the scene is completed and uses each photo as a frame in the animation. It’s similar to a flipbook with photos.

Walter Elias Disney (Walt Disney):  One of the most famous animators globally and is the creator of Mickey Mouse. He was also known for the movie Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, as it was the first full length animated film in the world. 

Hayao Miyazaki: Japan’s most outstanding animator director. He is the co-founder of Studio Ghibli and has produced some of the highest-grossing animated films in Japan. Some of his famous movies are Spirited Away, My Neighbour Totoro and Kiki’s Delivery Service. 

Stephen Hillenburg: Stephen is the creator of the talking sponge, SpongeBob Squarepants. SpongeBob Squarepants, which initially was thought of as a silly idea, has built an empire and is arguably one of the most well known animated cartoons among Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny.

  • Emotive Communication: Like with any art form, part of an animator’s job is to connect with the viewer through their designs and effects. The goal is to evoke a particular emotion, whether it’s heart-pounding suspense in a blockbuster film or excitement at seeing a brand’s commercial for a new product.

  • Attention to Details:  Animators are required to pay close attention to detail to ensure every piece of a project is working toward achieving its goal, and animation is no exception. Small details like highlights or light movement can be the difference between an average animation and one that captures an audience.

  • Organisational Skills: Animators often work on a team with others, juggling multiple projects and deadlines as they go about their daily work. Animators will often have many files in progress.

Most of the 7 wonders of the world were built with ancient civil engineers’ help, yes there were engineers way back in time. It could be as simple as the Stonehenge or remarkable as the Taj Mahal, whose construction by pre-industrial societies remains mysterious.

Although the names of the engineers who designed these wonders are lost to antiquity; in this article, we’ll be diving into details on how to become a civil engineer in the 21st century.

What is Civil Engineering?

Civil engineering is one of the oldest branches of engineering. It goes back to when people started living in permanent places without shifting constantly; therefore, they began shaping the environment according to their needs. 

A civil engineer is a professional who oversees construction projects. They are the ones responsible for the complete construction, functionality, and safety of the project. They have to use their education and civil engineering principles to bring designs by architects to life creations. They often have to work with a team of professionals and manage a large number of construction workers. This is quite a responsible job.

Is Civil Engineering and Architecture Similar?

In the construction industry, development projects usually require the knowledge and understanding of a civil engineer and an architect. Both professions have critical functions essential in any construction job, and they rely on one another to accomplish the given task. 

However, these two professions are generally similar, yet there are apparent differences between a civil engineer and an architect. 

 Architecture focuses more on the spatial functionality and aesthetics of the development work. It is more concerned with the look, feel and functionality of the design while civil engineering concentrates on the structural elements of the invention, ensuring that the structure can endure normal and extreme conditions. 

To summarise, an architect’s primary concern is designing the development work while civil engineers are responsible for ensuring that the design can be implemented safely and reliably.

What are the key skills needed for a Civil Engineer?

  • Management Skills: As you progress through your career, you’ll likely be gaining more responsibility as you might eventually end up as a manager of a project or even an entire division. To be successful, you would need to manage different personalities and backgrounds on essential tasks. 

  • Critical Thinking: Civil engineers are often confronted with challenging problems and must devise the most effective and reasonable approach when dealing with them. To do this, they must have the ability to think precisely and apply concepts and rules to a specific problem. 

  • Creative Mind: Thinking outside the box and being creative is essential to develop and implement new projects. 

  • Time Management: Complex constructions require effective time management if you want to hand over the building in time. Bear in mind that in the construction industry, time and budget works hand in hand. The more time it takes, the more money is needed to complete the project. 

  • Problem Solving: Problem-solving is used daily in the construction industry; nothing is plain sailing. You would need to deal with unexpected problems like burst water pipes or delay in material deliveries. 

Roles of Civil Engineers

  • Assess Construction Site: Civil engineers must assess and do a complete feasibility study of the construction site. They have to consider many factors, including the impact on nature, surrounding environment and plan accordingly.

  • Planning the Construction: Plans out the whole construction process beforehand. This has to be a systematic process to facilitate the smooth flow of work. Every step has to be meticulously planned. 

  • Staying in the Budget: If the budget has already been set for the work, the civil engineer must ensure that all the construction work happens within the budget. If the fund has not been set, the engineers will work along with the planner and set the budget and deadlines accordingly.  

  • Supervise the Construction: This is one of the most significant roles of a civil engineer, to oversee the construction. They have to see the building being done in phases set by them and check the quality during the construction.

Career with a Civil Engineering Degree

  • Building Control Surveyor: You’ll make sure that the building regulations are followed when houses, offices and buildings are designed and constructed or when it is altered or extended. If the buildings do not meet the requirement, you’ll be the one advising them and finding a solution. 

  • Computer-Aided Design (CAD) Technician: Uses a CAD software to create technical drawings and plans for products and parts used in the engineering, construction and manufacturing industries. You’ll work with architects and designs engineers to understand their initial designs’ requirements and turn them into accurate and detailed technical drawings in 2D and 3D. 

  • Site Engineer: As a site engineer, your input to construction projects will be technical, organisational and supervisory. You’ll set out and determine the location for infrastructural installations, both above and below ground, and will apply designs and plans to mark out the site.

  • Design Engineer: You’ll be involved in the initial concept, design, development and management of projects in various sectors such as construction and the built environment, software and many more.

Have you been fascinated by animals and the tiniest insects or were you a fan of Steven Irwin, the man that literally lived for animals and died because of one. At first, nature might seem like a big ball of rope that is intertwined and knotted, but when you take a closer look and try to understand nature’s handiwork, you’ll understand why animals behave in a certain way or why and allows you to understand and admire nature for what it is.

In this article, we are taking the opportunity to dive deeper into nature and explain everything you need to know to become a Zoologist.

What is Zoology?

Zoologists are biologists that study various animal species. There is an excellent variety of animals and complex processes occurring within them. Zoology is known to be one of the broadest fields of science. Zoologists often study animals and their interaction with the ecosystem. They learn the animal’s physical characteristics, diets, behaviours and the impact humans have on them. There are over 2 million animal species; therefore, zoologists usually specialize in one or more of the zoology branches.

What do You Study in a Zoology Degree?

Core Subjects Taught in Zoology

  • Global Challenges in Biology: In this subject, students will be taught how human health, quality of life, and future are linked to the well being of organisms and the environment that we share. This lays the foundation for understanding and facing the environmental and biomedical challenges facing humans and the planet.

  • Zoology: Covers animals diversity and evolution. Describes the variety and life histories of animals. Students will become familiar with the body form, functions, life history, and characteristics of the animals’ major group. 

  • Animal Behaviour: Covers about animal behaviours, from developments to physiological and how patterns of behaviour evolve. Students are often asked to critically evaluate and test hypotheses about behaviour and carry out research projects on animal behaviours. 

  • Biostatistics & Experimental Design: This subject allows students to examine the process that drives plants and animals’ diversity and distribution. It covers how new species are discovered, recognized and described

Why Study Zoology in Australia?

  • Global Academic Recognition: Despite being one of the largest countries, Australia has a small nation, but that does not stop them from being the home for some of the best research institutions. Universities in Australia provide high-quality academic programs in the science field like nursing and healthcare, biology, chemistry and even zoology. 

  • Wide Choice of Subjects: Just because you have signed up for a degree in Zoology does not mean that you cannot study subjects out of the course. In Australia, students are allowed to broaden their spectrum of learning by choosing subjects not listed in the course. 

  • Language: Studying in countries where the first language is not English could be a hassle, especially when doing simple grocery shopping or even asking questions to your lecturer. However, this isn’t a problem for international students who opt to study in Australia as English is the primary language. However, students might struggle for a few months initially trying to understand the Australian slang but eventually get the hang of it.

  • Wide range of Animals & Insects: Australia is the best place to opt for if you want to pursue a Zoology course as it has a wide range of animals and insects, even some of the deadliest species can be found in Australia. Australia is the home for 21 out of 25 venomous snakes, crocodiles, poisonous spiders and also the Tasmanian devils.

What can You do with a Zoology Degree?

Career Opportunities with a Degree in Zoology

  • Zoologist: Conducts field and laboratory research, gathering pieces of information about animals in their natural habitat or in captivity 

  • Animal Nutritionist: Responsible for creating and balancing ratios to ensure all dietary needs are met for the animals under their supervision. 

  • Zookeeper: A zookeeper works with all kinds of animals, including preparing food and feeding them, checking for signs for distress, injuries or diseases in animals, helping to care for sick animals and keeping daily healthcare records. 

  • Ecologist: Studies how plants, animals and humans interact with each other. Ecologists will need good analytical skills as they will be conducting various experiments.

Do You have to Work in a “Zoo” if you Study Zoology?

Despite the name, a degree in Zoology will do more than to just qualify you to work in a Zoo. The science, research data, analysis and behavioural skills you’ll learn can make you attractive to a wide variety of organizations including charities, government agencies and research centres.

What Other Similar Degree Programs could You Take?

  • Animal Science: Is described as “studying the biology of animals under the control of humans”. Animal science is often linked between science and business producing domestic livestock, for example, sheep, cattle and swine. 

  • Animal Bioscience: The study of animals metabolism, genetic, physiology, behaviour, health and the social and environmental impact towards domestic animals.

  • Wildlife Science: Studies the native and exotic amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals and biodiversity and human-wildlife interaction. Looks at how the entire ecosystem works from the tiniest bees to the antarctic blue whale.

  • Marine Biology or Science: Focuses on marine life and organisms their behaviour and interactions with the environment. A marine biologist studies biological oceanography and the associated chemical, physical and geographical oceanography to understand marine organisms.
