Education Pathways in Malaysia after UEC

Sharing is caring :)

What is UEC?

The United Examination Certificate (UEC) was created to standardise examinations for independent Chinese schools that use Mandarin as their primary language. However, students from Chinese independent schools still sit for all the national examinations such as PMR and SPM. The syllabus is taught alongside the school’s own Chinese programme, with the teachers allocating time to teach the government syllabus as well.

Students will sit for Junior UEC and PMR in the same year, the topics are taught simultaneously in two languages and cover identical material. After that, students take SPM in their 2nd senior year and sit for the UEC in the 3rd senior year. These two exams do not overlap, allowing students and teachers to completely concentrate on the upcoming exams. Not all Chinese independent school students choose to stay for their 3rd senior year and the UEC, just as not all government school students want to stay for Form 6 and their STPM.

Education Pathways After UEC

Those who stay on for UEC, on the other hand, will find that their tertiary education will be limited to private schools that accept their UEC results, as the UEC is not recognised in government universities unless they are using their SPM results to take an additional year of Diploma or Foundation studies.

The UEC exam is equivalent to STPM and A-levels and is recognised in other countries like the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, Taiwan, and more. Therefore, students who have finished their UEC are more likely to continue their post-secondary education at private institutions or abroad rather than staying in Malaysia.

With the wide variety of courses and institutions available in Malaysia, you might feel very overwhelmed to choose the right course, and the suitable university, therefore we have prepared a list for you, with some university recommendations and also its popular courses.

I thank life for happening, thank every twist and turn, I believe that there is a reason for every single thing, a reason for every worry and concern.

(Double Major)?

Sharing is caring :)

Sharing is caring :)

Becoming A Psychiatrist in Australia

Sharing is caring :)

What is a Psychiatrist?

Psychiatrists are physicians who evaluate, diagnose and treat patients who are affected by mental health issues, no matter temporary or chronic.

A psychiatrist is a certified medical doctor who chooses to specialize in mental health disorders. They are fully equipped with a deep understanding of physical and mental health, and how they overlap.  They are dedicated to providing a course of treatment and care specifically catered to the patient’s needs. They are also qualified to assess both the mental and physical aspects of psychological problems.

Upon diagnosis, a psychiatrist provides a range of treatments such as psychological treatment, medication, or brain stimulation therapy. They provide you with information about your condition and help you understand your symptoms and ways to treat them.

Roles and Responsibilities of Psychiatrists include:

  • Order or perform a medical laboratory and psychological tests
  • Evaluate and understand the relationship between emotional, medical illnesses and its possible relation to genetics and family history
  • Evaluate medical and psychological data
  • Provide urgent care for sudden mental illness
  • Help patient manage and live with long-term mental illness
  • Make a diagnosis and work with the patient to develop treatment plans
  • Prescribe medication to patients to treat mental health disorders

Generally, Psychiatrists are able to work in public and private hospitals as community mental health centres. Many psychiatrists also do research work, provide legal advice, and teach in schools and universities.

Skills Needed to Become A Psychiatrist

  • Ability to understand and empathize

You have the ability to understand and solve problems faced by your patients. As such, you should have the ability to have compassion and empathy towards others. You need to be able to understand the problems and challenges faced. Then, you should not internalize the issue at hand but rather keep your emotions neutral and focus on helping your patient effectively.

  • Good communication skills

The ability to communicate efficiently with people is also a very crucial skill to have. You should be a capable listener. One of the most significant parts of your relationship with your patient is understanding their challenges and struggles faced. You should pay attention to the intonation, expression, and tone of voice used when listening. Besides that, you should also be a capable speaker. Many times, you would be required to not only speak to your patient but also their loved ones in communicating the issue at hand. You must be able to explain specific medical terminology to other medical professionals as well as average people with little to no medical knowledge.

  • Emotional resilience

Psychiatry is commonly known as a mentally draining field. Working in challenging situations, you should be able to monitor developing situations and anticipate issues. Your daily roles and responsibilities include listening to struggles and challenges faced by your patients. Most times, your patients come to you at their last straw. It is very important for you to be emotionally resilient. You need to be able to deal with many patients that have severe disorders and help them without letting your emotions cloud your judgment.

Difference Between A Psychiatrist & A Psychologists

Psychiatrist

Psychologists

Psychiatrist are medical doctors that specialize in diagnosis and treatment of mental illness

Psychologists are NOT doctors but they undergo special training in the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness

Psychiatrist provides a wide range of treatments such as: medication, general medical care, stimulation therapies and psychological treatments

Psychologists CANNOT provide medication. Instead, they focus on assessing human behavior and providing psychological treatments

Psychiatrist treat people with more complex mental health conditions such as: severe depression, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder

Psychologists treat people with less severe mental health issues that can be solved without medication such as anxiety, learning difficulties, depression, and behavioural problems

General Pathway of Becoming A Psychiatrist in Australia

To become a Psychiatrist in Australia, it generally takes 11-12 years upon stepping into university. Firstly, you need to gain a Medical Degree from a university, which takes 5-7 years to complete. Upon completion, you are expected to spend at least 2 years receiving general medical training in a hospital. Then, to become a certified psychiatrist, you need to complete at least 5 years training under the supervision of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP). This training can be completed in hospitals, clinics, or health clinics.  All psychiatrists must also be registered with the relevant medical board in Australia or New Zealand in order to see patients.

Common Challenges of Studying Abroad and How to Overcome It

Sharing is caring :)

Studying abroad is not all sunshine and rainbows, it could be a lot of fun, but certainly not easy. For those of you who dream of studying abroad, you should expect some road bumps here and there, but it should not stop you from chasing that dream. Here are five common challenges international students face while studying abroad and how you could overcome them!

Overcoming the Language Barrier

The language barrier is one of the most common challenges of studying abroad, especially when you do not understand their national language. You might need to learn a new language from scratch, or even when you are studying in a country where you could understand their language, the local accent might be a struggle as well. Some slang phrases that are widely used in that country will seem strange to you, but the more you practice, the more comfortable you will become!

You could use some online tools to overcome the language barrier, for instance, Duolingo offers a very helpful language learning program. Do not be afraid to speak to the locals, make an effort to familiarise yourself with the local lingo.

Feeling Left Out

It is normal to feel left out and feel like an outsider especially at the beginning. If you are traveling alone and arriving at your university it might seem that everybody already has their group of friends, and you might feel like an outsider. There will be times when you would just want to stay in your hostel room and not know what to do or where to go, and this is extremely common, it is normal to feel lonely arriving at your new destination.

You should take this opportunity to step out of your comfort zone and approach those who seem to be alone and make conversation, introduce yourself and build your own group. Do not be afraid to be that person to start the conversation!

Getting Used to Currency Differences

Getting used to the currency differences can also be a challenging process for the new international students. You need to get yourself familiarized with the exchange rate and some of the monetary differences. For instance, taxes are included in the price of an item in many countries, but not in Canada and the United States. Having a better understanding of these differences would save you from unnecessary confusion at the cash register.

You can always have an online currency converter application downloaded to your phone. Make sure you find the one that you are most comfortable with and work out a quick conversion system for yourself, so you can mentally compare the prices.

Feeling Homesick

It is extremely normal to feel homesick when you are being far away from your family and friends, who are usually your support network. Living thousands of miles away from them might make you feel isolated, especially when everything around you is so unfamiliar. You will start to miss the things you were not previously aware of how important they were, it could be the sofa in your living room, your annoying yet lovable sibling, and your mom’s cooking.

In this case, joining new clubs in your university might help, try to get involved with new activities and always stay active. You need to connect with people, with the students who are feeling the same, and embrace as much of your new surroundings as possible.

Culture Shock

You would experience some culture shock when studying abroad, each country has its own culture and you may find it difficult to integrate. As a foreigner, you would not know 100% of the host country’s culture, even if you have already done your research. You will make mistakes and may feel awkward but do not feel embarrassed, learn from it, and do not make the same mistake again.

Make friends with at least one local person, try to establish meaningful relationships especially cross-cultural boundaries. Observe the locals and immerse yourself in their culture. You will eventually adjust and can even teach your new friends about your culture

Studying in Australia

Australia is one of the most popular destinations for international students looking to study abroad. There is a long list of reasons behind its popularity, the stunning beaches, the cultural diversity, amazing wildlife, standard of living, and most importantly the high quality of education. There are numerous universities in Australia that provide a wide variety of degrees. The list below includes the Group of Eight (Go8) universities, which are the largest and oldest educational institutions of Australia, with high rankings and strong industry connections.

Tuition fees for international students generally fall within the range of;

  • A$20,000-50,000 per year for Bachelor’s Degree
  • A$22,000- 50,000 per year for Master’s and PhD Degrees

Another factor you need to be mindful of is whether your qualifications match the entry requirements of your preferred Australian University. Entry requirements in Australia typically include academic requirements and English language requirements. 2. Which Cities are the Best for International Students in Australia?

Whenever Australia is mentioned, we often tend to think of cities such as Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane. These cities do have a lot to offer, but international students should think beyond the big cities and explore the benefits of studying in different parts and regions of the country.

All the towns, cities and regions that lie beyond the major capital cities in Australia are called regional areas. Vice versa, the major capital cities, particularly, Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane are referred to as non-regional areas. During recent years, the popularity for studying in regional areas among international students has been increasing due to the several perks associated with it. Let’s take a look at a list of differences in terms of benefits that regional and non-regional areas in Australia have for you.

1. Lower Cost of Living in Regional Areas

If you are a student looking to minimize the cost of living in Australia, studying in a regional area would be an excellent option for you, as the cost of living in big cities, unlike regional areas, are very expensive, mainly due to the high accommodation expenses.

To compare costs of living in different regions of Australia, you can visit numbeo.com.

2. More Migration Opportunities in Regional Areas

Students who graduate with a bachelor’s Degree or higher from universities in Regional Areas also have broader migration opportunities, and are offered an additional 2 years in Australia on a post-study work visa (post graduation visa given to students who studied a minimum of 2 years). In addition to the  extra 2 years, an additional 5 points on the Immigration Points Test is also also offered to students who pursue their studies in regional areas, which means you will be more likely to get Permanent Residency in Australia upon application.

3. Nature and Culture of Australia

In addition to the perks mentioned above, regional areas are also closer to nature, meaning you will get to experience the true beauty of Australia. Moreover, you also get to experience the true Australian culture when living in regional areas, and  live the true and typical Aussie lifestyle.

3. How Much are the Living Expenses in Australia?

The Average cost of living in Australia for students ranges between A$1300 and A$2000 to cover all costs of living, including accommodation, food and transportation. This amount however varies between different cities and locations in Australia.

Making sure you have the budget to live in Australia is particularly important because when applying for a student visa, you are required to prove that you have the financial capability to study and live in Australia

Ultimately, your cost of living in any country comes down to your own lifestyle and preferences. So you need to be mindful about how you spend and make sure you do not exceed your monthly budget.

4. What are the Student Accommodation Options in Australia?

Here’s a list of the general types of accommodation in Australia for international students that you can choose from.

Please note that some universities require students to stay on campus during the first year of study. So make sure you know the requirements of your university before signing any lease to live somewhere else.

1. On Campus

Some universities offer on-campus accommodation for students such as on-campus housing or halls of residence. This is a popular option for international students because of the convenience it provides, such as proximity to university. Depending on your university, you might have the option to rent a private room, shared room or shared suite with a kitchen and common area. The average rent for an on campus stay can range from A$110 to 280 per week, depending on the type of accommodation you choose.

2. Off Campus

Off campus accommodation options include, private rentals, or “share houses” (if you are sharing with other people). This type of accommodation is rented from a landlord , where you are the tenant. This option provides you with more independence as you can live anywhere and you have more flexibility in terms of accommodation type. The average rent for off campus accommodation can range from A$185 to 440 per week, depending on the type of accommodation you choose.

However, it is important to choose a location that is close to your university, so that getting to the university everyday is not a hassle for you.

3. Homestay

Homestay is an excellent option for international students during their first few months of stay in Australia. It is a type of cultural exchange program where students live in the house of a local host. It gives you the opportunity to experience the local culture and get used to the new environment with the help of your host and also a way to make new local friends. The average rent for homestay can range from A$235 to 325 per week, depending on the types of meals provided, rooms and utilities.

To explore your accommodation options in different locations of Australia within your budget, you can search the world’s largest student housing provider, unilodgers.com.

5. Can I Work and Study as an International Student?

The answer is, yes! A great way to cope with the high cost of living in Australia for many international students is getting a part-time job.

International students are allowed to work 40 hours per fortnight (14 day period which starts on Monday and ends on Sunday) while school is in session and are allowed to work for unlimited hours during the school vacations. However, students can only start working after their course has begun, even if they are allowed to enter Australia 90 days before the course start date

The minimum wage in Australia is currently at $19.84 per hour.

Some of the popular part-time jobs for international students in Australia include jobs that offer flexible working hours such as jobs at supermarkets, cafes, bars, and tutoring among many others. You can use popular job-search websites in Australia such as, Seek, indeed, careerone and ApplyDirect to search for jobs.  Some universities also have their own websites for job postings for students.

6. Can International Students Stay in Australia After Graduation?

One of the perks of choosing Australia as your study abroad destination is that it provides students with work opportunities in the country even after graduation with a post-study work visa. This is a great option for students looking to stay long term in Australia or gain permanent residency.

For this visa you are required to apply for Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485). Under this visa, students who completed their bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in Australia can stay for 2-3 years, whereas students who completed their PhD are eligible to stay for 4 years. All in all, in order to be eligible for post graduate visa you need to have studied in Australia for a minimum of 2 years pursuing a bachelor’s degree or higher

Skilled migration is another option that international students in Australia have, to obtain permanent residency without being sponsored by an Employer in Australia. This visa is solely based on your skillset and uses a point system to see if you are qualified. Your points depend on whether your occupation is in the Skilled Occupation List, your length of study, length of work experience in Australia, age (19-44 years) and English ability.

7. What is the University Application Process in Australia?

After choosing which university to pursue your preferred course at, the application process starts.

Applying to an Australian university can be quite easy, as it can be done both online and offline. But it includes a lot of paperwork. After checking whether you have fulfilled all the academic and english language requirements, the next thing you need to do is to submit the required documents to your university. Listed below are the documents that you would generally need to submit;

  • Completely Filled Application Form

Sharing is caring :)
