Computer Science vs Software Engineering: What are the differences?

Sharing is caring :)

The rise in technology makes a smartphone no longer a luxury thing to own but it is a necessity to make life and work easier. Not only that, many people including big corporations around the globe are depending on computers and technology for meetings, work and projects.

According to the United States of Bureau of Labor Statistics, jobs in software development are expected to grow 24% while computer and information research scientists can see a 19% growth by 2024.

Therefore, students must make a thorough research before deciding which course to pursue because this will make such a huge impact in your future. As we are in Industrial Revolution 4.0, a lot of companies are targeting to hire graduates with excellent GPA in a technology- related degree. With so many good education fields out there, there are 2 fields which students often confuse and they are Computer Science and Software Engineering.

There are overlapping areas in their functioning and training, however, they are not the same. In this article, I will break down to you the differences between these two fields so you can choose which degree to study.

What is Computer Science?

Computer Science is a study of principles and the process of computers work. It includes the study of how data is processed, the security of networks, organizing databases, artificial intelligence and the development of websites and applications. This field explores how computers work in terms of algorithms and the computations that drive processes that manipulate data with theories.

What is Software Engineering?

Software Engineering is a product of programming and engineering. It involves the application of engineering principles to software design. This field considers the hardware and software aspects of computers when creating software systems that are efficient with minimum bugs and problems.

What will you study in Computer Science?

Students will study more on abstract principles and the coursework is more rigorous using principles such as Mathematics, Physics and computational programming. Apart from the mentioned areas in the above illustration, students will also learn data analysis, applied machine learning and even artificial intelligence.

What will you study in Software Engineering?

Students will be exposed more to practical skills using Mathematics, Mechanical Physics and basic Engineering principles. The coursework will focus more on design, analysis and quality assurance of software to solve problems. Students will need to familiarize with programming languages such as Java, Javascript, C++ and Python.

What are the necessary skills that Computer Scientists have?

Analytical Skills: Ability to analyze a huge amount of data and to draw conclusions out of it.

Problem Solving Skills: Identify and understand the problems in order to come up with the best solutions to address it.

Creativity: Ability to think out-of-the-box because problems that arise will require many modern and innovative solutions.

Critical Thinking Skills: Need to understand and know all the methodologies as graduates will be involved in many projects. Therefore, the skills to use the right methodologies at the right time at the right projects.

Resilience: Ability to be resilient and determined in order to find the correct solutions. You are likely to face many challenges and failures before coming up with the right answers.

What are the necessary skills that Software Engineers have?

Multitask: A software engineer will be given multiple projects with a deadline-driven circumstances. Therefore, the skills to prioritize and manage all the projects without passing the dateline.

Teamwork: Ability to communicate with other people in the team to ensure the projects given are heading to the right direction. They also need to discuss the problems and challenges that arise and how to solve it.

Attention to Details: There are certain practices and standards in the industry that a software engineer must master such as testing protocol, analyzing codes while maintaining older codes. They must be able to troubleshoot while ensuring old program systems are not affected.

Computer Coding Languages: Many software engineers are only familiar with only 1 or 2 coding languages. However, to be a successful software engineer that has the competitive advantage to attract more employers to hire you, it is better to master multiple coding languages such as HTML, C++, SQL, Java, JavaScript, PHP, and CSS.

What are the career prospects for graduates in Computer Science and Software Engineering?

What are your interests?

Choose Computer Science:

If you would like to get into a specialised field such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Security or graphics.

Choose Software Engineering:

If you want to learn the overall life cycle of how software is built, updated and maintained.

You know the importance of good quality education will bring a great difference in your resume and eventually your opportunity to be employed and earn a handsome income. That is why you must choose only the best university to study to ensure you stay competitive upon graduation.

Is ACCA the Right Course for You?

Sharing is caring :)

You are passionate about accounting and numbers and you heard about the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). But you are not sure whether ACCA is the best course for your future. Before you make any decision, let us take a look at what this course is all about and do you have what it takes to pursue it?

About ACCA

Now, ACCA is a professional accountancy body that is recognised, highly respected and valued around the world. They have 17 joint exam partnerships with national accountancy bodies globally that allows their trainees to qualify using ACCA Qualification structure. You see, not everyone in the accounting world is qualified and allowed to use the designatory letters ACCA behind their name.

Only students that complete ALL of the 13 exams, work for a required number of years and complete the professional ethics module are allowed to use this prestigious title in their business card, provided they keep updating themselves with the ACCA regulations, standards and news every year. With ACCA behind your name, you are a Chartered Certified Accountant and this means you are high calibre, experienced and deserve a higher salary than other people in the industry. This prestigious accountancy body should not be confused with an accounting degree examination.

Details of ACCA Examination

Passing marks: 50% and above

Total exam papers: 13

Number of resit allowed: Unlimited

Exam Sittings: March, June, September & December every year

Maximum years to finish all papers: 10 years

Trust me when I say ACCA is known everywhere in the world for its tough and rigorous exams #beentheredonethat. With only one mark difference can change your whole strategy for the next study plan. ACCA regarded 0% to 49% as failed and 50% and above as passed. What you will study is very technical and industry-related on topics such as Law, Tax, Audit, Finance and Performance Management.

There are 3 steps of ACCA exams and you must complete every paper before proceeding to the next step. The steps and papers are:

1. ACCA Applied Knowledge:

AB- Accountant In Business

MA- Management Accounting

FA- Financial Accounting

2. ACCA Applied Skills:

LW – Corporate and Business Law

PM – Performance Management

TX – Taxation

FR – Financial Reporting

AA – Audit and Assurance

FM – Financial Management

3. ACCA Strategic Professional:

Essential:

SBL – Strategic Business Leader

SBR – Strategic Business Reporting

Options: Choose 2 only

AFM – Advanced Financial Management

APM – Advanced Performance Management

ATX – Advanced Taxation

AAA – Advanced Audit and Assurance

Once you have completed all these papers, you are not done yet. You need to sit for the Ethics and Professional Skills Module before entering the related working field or known as Practical Experience Requirement (PER). Most graduates choose to work with the Big 4 while some prefer commercial companies. The minimum years of working is 3 years before you become an affiliate. But bear in mind, you need to renew your member fees every year and failure to do so will result in losing the ACCA designatory letter and you are no longer associated with this top accountancy body.

Quick Self-Assessment: Is ACCA the Right Choice for You?

So now you know the history of ACCA and the exam structure. It is time for you to do some self-reflections and answer the questions below to find out whether this route is for you or against you.

1. Do you love challenges?

You must love challenges and not just ‘like’ them. ACCA exam papers are one of the most difficult exams in the world to complete. You must have the perseverance attitude, not easily give up and be strong in spirit because if you fail one paper, you must re-sit it. But what if you fail that paper for the 5th time? Many ACCA students experienced it.

Therefore, you must have the determination, self-disciplined and persistence to study that particular paper, attend the class, do a lot of practices before attempting the paper for the 6th time. So, if you are the type of student who loves hard and tough exam papers, go check the second questions.

2. Do you have a strong grasp on English language?

The exam papers are prepared by a board of qualified and expert people from the accounting industry in the United Kingdom. The question style is different compared to local universities whereby the knowledge on and lifestyle of local people is acknowledged.

However, since the exam authors are mostly British, you have to familiarise yourself with British way of professional business settings to understand the exam papers. If you also say yes to this question, go ahead and check the last question.

3. Do you see yourself as a Chartered Certified Accountant in the future?

You see, many people assume that the accountants only deal with numbers. That is not the case because you also need to understand the law of the country you practise, standards used to deal with accounting issues and actively participate in the company’s business future plan. So if you see yourself doing all these in the future, then being an accountant might be the right career for you.

If you answer YES to all these 3 questions, then this course is for you!

How to Become a Game Designer?

You love games so much but no one seems to understand the importance of games in your life. Your parents nagged you every time you played it (#ikr) or even your friends said you are being anti-social. It’s okay because I know how significant games are in your life because let’s be real without games, the world is a boring place to live. It’s your escape to a fantasyland and your adrenaline getting higher and higher when you are trying to overcome one level to go to the next and that feeling of accomplishment the moment you successfully overcome that level is just amazing #ifeelyou.

But you know what, with your interest in games and your creativity, you can make more people happy as you can design games according to your artistic skills. Not only that, imagine you get to be the witness from day 1 designing the game to the day where people start talking about how much they love it, just like how you and your friends start talking about Call of Duty or The Legend of Zelda or even Fifa 20.

Before you make your way to the gaming industry, do you have what it takes to be a games designer? This field is highly competitive so lets do a quick test before entering the field.

1. Do You Have These Skills to Become a Game Designer?

Canva - Man Playing Game on Personal Computer

  • Fluent in 2D and 3D animation and graphics packages
  • Understanding of gameplay theory
  • Relevant health and safety procedures and legislation

If your answers are mostly yes, then how about the third question?

3. Do You Have the Proper Education to Become a Game Designer?
