Is ACCA the Right Course for You?

Sharing is caring :)

You are passionate about accounting and numbers and you heard about the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). But you are not sure whether ACCA is the best course for your future. Before you make any decision, let us take a look at what this course is all about and do you have what it takes to pursue it?

About ACCA

Now, ACCA is a professional accountancy body that is recognised, highly respected and valued around the world. They have 17 joint exam partnerships with national accountancy bodies globally that allows their trainees to qualify using ACCA Qualification structure. You see, not everyone in the accounting world is qualified and allowed to use the designatory letters ACCA behind their name.

Only students that complete ALL of the 13 exams, work for a required number of years and complete the professional ethics module are allowed to use this prestigious title in their business card, provided they keep updating themselves with the ACCA regulations, standards and news every year. With ACCA behind your name, you are a Chartered Certified Accountant and this means you are high calibre, experienced and deserve a higher salary than other people in the industry. This prestigious accountancy body should not be confused with an accounting degree examination.

Details of ACCA Examination

Passing marks: 50% and above

Total exam papers: 13

Number of resit allowed: Unlimited

Exam Sittings: March, June, September & December every year

Maximum years to finish all papers: 10 years

Trust me when I say ACCA is known everywhere in the world for its tough and rigorous exams #beentheredonethat. With only one mark difference can change your whole strategy for the next study plan. ACCA regarded 0% to 49% as failed and 50% and above as passed. What you will study is very technical and industry-related on topics such as Law, Tax, Audit, Finance and Performance Management.

There are 3 steps of ACCA exams and you must complete every paper before proceeding to the next step. The steps and papers are:

1. ACCA Applied Knowledge:

AB- Accountant In Business

MA- Management Accounting

FA- Financial Accounting

2. ACCA Applied Skills:

LW – Corporate and Business Law

PM – Performance Management

TX – Taxation

FR – Financial Reporting

AA – Audit and Assurance

FM – Financial Management

3. ACCA Strategic Professional:

Essential:

SBL – Strategic Business Leader

SBR – Strategic Business Reporting

Options: Choose 2 only

AFM – Advanced Financial Management

APM – Advanced Performance Management

ATX – Advanced Taxation

AAA – Advanced Audit and Assurance

Once you have completed all these papers, you are not done yet. You need to sit for the Ethics and Professional Skills Module before entering the related working field or known as Practical Experience Requirement (PER). Most graduates choose to work with the Big 4 while some prefer commercial companies. The minimum years of working is 3 years before you become an affiliate. But bear in mind, you need to renew your member fees every year and failure to do so will result in losing the ACCA designatory letter and you are no longer associated with this top accountancy body.

Quick Self-Assessment: Is ACCA the Right Choice for You?

So now you know the history of ACCA and the exam structure. It is time for you to do some self-reflections and answer the questions below to find out whether this route is for you or against you.

1. Do you love challenges?

You must love challenges and not just ‘like’ them. ACCA exam papers are one of the most difficult exams in the world to complete. You must have the perseverance attitude, not easily give up and be strong in spirit because if you fail one paper, you must re-sit it. But what if you fail that paper for the 5th time? Many ACCA students experienced it.

Therefore, you must have the determination, self-disciplined and persistence to study that particular paper, attend the class, do a lot of practices before attempting the paper for the 6th time. So, if you are the type of student who loves hard and tough exam papers, go check the second questions.

2. Do you have a strong grasp on English language?

The exam papers are prepared by a board of qualified and expert people from the accounting industry in the United Kingdom. The question style is different compared to local universities whereby the knowledge on and lifestyle of local people is acknowledged.

However, since the exam authors are mostly British, you have to familiarise yourself with British way of professional business settings to understand the exam papers. If you also say yes to this question, go ahead and check the last question.

3. Do you see yourself as a Chartered Certified Accountant in the future?

You see, many people assume that the accountants only deal with numbers. That is not the case because you also need to understand the law of the country you practise, standards used to deal with accounting issues and actively participate in the company’s business future plan. So if you see yourself doing all these in the future, then being an accountant might be the right career for you.

If you answer YES to all these 3 questions, then this course is for you!

Things To Do Before Applying to University

Sharing is caring :)

What you should know before applying to university?

Choosing to continue your higher education is a big decision for anyone to make. There is a lot that must be taken into consideration before taking that step.

Here are a few things you should know as an individual applying to university:

1. Have a goal. What degree do you want to do?

If you are someone who has always had one specific goal in mind or a career to follow, then this step is quite easy for you. However, there are those who may need to have a thorough discussion with their family or friends regarding their future, and this will help them establish their end goal and what they want out of higher education.

Then there are some who are slightly confused about what they want to do or what they want to study. This is where step 2 comes in.

2. Do your research. Which university is the best for your degree?

The second most important thing to do after you have established your list of goals is to do some research. Your end goal or chosen career path will ideally depict the areas in which you must continue your studies. Each university has a wide range of study areas to choose from, and you can read and gain basic knowledge about each of those subjects, courses and outcomes.

3. Don’t forget to check the entry requirements for university.

Another important factor to consider is that each university has a different entry requirement. Therefore, once you have done your research and picked out the top choices for your preferred study area, do read through the entry requirements for each university to see whether you are eligible to apply for that particular course.

Alongside the entry requirements, deadlines for applications will be provided by each university. This will help you to avoid any additional unnecessary documentation and application fees.

4. University Application Process.

Once you have all the information ready as mentioned above, you can start with your application process. Once again, it is important to read through the universities requirements regarding documentation.

It is crucial to have all of the necessary supporting documents such as your examination results, transcripts and if needed, recommendation letters. It is highly recommended that you start compiling all the documentation ahead of time to ensure a smooth application process.

5. Tuition Fees for University.

Another important factor is the tuition fee to be paid annually. Every university has a different indicative fee and you can receive a breakdown of it so you can go through it carefully. This will help you and your family gain a better understanding of what really constitutes your fee, such as administration costs or student union fees and understand the financial commitment for you and your family.

6. Find Accommodation: On campus vs Off Campus.

Every university provides a variety of options when it comes to living abroad. You can choose between on-campus or off- campus. However, what’s most important as a student is to ensure safety and security wherever you live whilst also getting the “home away from home” feeling. Most housing is modern, furnished and provides privacy. You have the option of choosing between apartments, village housing, flats, studio apartments or even living with a family while studying abroad.

Cost of accommodation varies depending on whether you choose on or off campus housing, location and type of room. It is also important to look into other factors surrounding the decision of choosing your accommodation, such as, convenience and close proximity to your campus. This will also cover things like transportation to go back and forth to your campus.

7. How to pay your university tuition fee?

This is also one of those major decisions that have to be decided carefully. In most cases, family members finance students to study abroad but there are many other circumstances in which the students themselves can self-finance their whole degree, accommodation and even their general expenses. Regardless, there are many financial options offered by the university or the local/international Governments.

For example, many universities provide financial aid to students who find it difficult to make their payments, however, it is important to read the eligibility criteria. In addition, many universities offer academic and sports scholarships, bursaries and student loans.

8. Set up a bank account for your university tuition fee.

If you haven’t already set up a bank account under your name, it is advised to do so before you start your studies. This will help you to transfer money at ease. Most universities make it mandatory to set up a bank account because this will enable you to directly make payments for your tuition fees, accommodation fees or even general expenses. By setting up an account you can also receive/send money to your family or friends.

9. Budgeting for University.

This is definitely something of utmost importance. Every student has different expenditures and financial commitments. In addition to accommodation and tuition fees, you can take some time to make a general breakdown of a daily, weekly or monthly budget. To begin this, you can speak to past students or current students studying on campus, family , friends or even check online for a cost breakdown.

This can include paying for food, outings, transport, clothing, books, and groceries etc. This will help you to manage your finances better and keep you organized throughout your studies.

10. Talk To Us.

We know how challenging it is to do your own research on the universities that you have interest in. So, we at Excel Education are here for you. You can ask us any questions for FREE. We will try our best to answer them because we want to help you to get into your dream universities!

Which Pre-Uni Should You Choose: Foundation, A-Level, SAM, or AUSMAT?

Sharing is caring :)

What's a Pre-University program?

Choosing the right path of study is crucial for the future. If you have taken your SPM/UEC, the next thing to think about is: what’s next? If your next decision is to pursue a degree, then the next step you are most likely to take is doing a Pre-University program.

A Pre-University program is a preparatory course that aims to provide students with essential skills and knowledge that helps them to handle the challenges of an undergraduate course.

In Malaysia, there are numerous different pre-university programs that are offered by universities and it can surely be challenging to find one that best suits you. It is necessary to spend some time finding out more about each type of pre-university program so that your transition into a bachelor’s degree will be much easier. That’s why here, we’ll help you clarify different pre-university programs such as:

  1. Foundation Program
  2. A-Level
  3. South Australian Matriculation (SAM) and Australian Matriculation (AUSMAT)

and get you a better understanding of each of them!

Foundation Program

What is Foudation?

Certain qualification does not allow students to enter University directly. So, the Foundation program will be the key for the students to enter the University. At the same time, pursuing foundation program helps students to build up their understanding towards the field that they are interested in. For international students, it helps them to improve their English language skills while learning the basics of their field. Foundation Program comes with several benefits.

Benefits of Foundation Program

  • Short Study Duration

Usually, the University foundation program will only take 12 months to be completed. It is considered as a short duration because the alternative option which is the A-Level, will take 18-24 months to be completed. Shorter the duration means lesser the cost. The average price for the Foundation Program in Malaysia is RM 16,000 but it may vary at each university.

  • Opportunity to settle into tertiary studies

Tertiary studies are significantly different than how we are used to studying in school. The style of learning will be more independent and the interaction with lecturers will be lower. It could be a challenge for the students but it will be a chance for them to adapt to the changes and prepare themselves to continue with their tertiary studies.

  • Study area

The Foundation program is short and focused on a particular area of study. It will prepare the students with the basics of their chosen field. Subjects that the students learn in this program will be the fundamental components of their chosen area of study.

Types of Foundation Program in Malaysia

A-Level

What is A-Level?

A-Level, short for ‘Advanced Level’, is a widely recognized pre-university program that is based on the UK education system and is offered in Malaysia. The program can take up to 18 months depending on when you start your studies. It can be said as the “STPM” of UK since both are equivalent to other pre-university programs. Thus, they still have some differences. As A-Level is 100% exam based, STPM consist of school-based assessments (20–40% of final score) plus final exams (60–80% of final score).

In Malaysia, A-Level courses offered are either governed by the Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) or Edexcel examination boards.

The A level subject is divided into two levels: Advanced Subsidiary (AS) and Advanced Two (A2) levels. Each of them contributes 50% of the final grade. The A level programs offer two streams – Science and Arts. It offered various subjects from Biology, Math, Chemistry, Computer Science, Accounting, to Law. You have the freedom to choose the subjects that you want to take. Universities usually required you to take 3-4 subjects only, since it is better for you to focus and concentrate on fewer subjects and then do well on them.

Benefits of A-Level

  • Opens to a lot of options

Since you can choose different subjects that you want, you can choose the one that you are expert in and like the most. Moreover, if you still don’t know what to pursue, then A-level is perfect for you since it enables you to pursue a wide range of degrees after the completion of the program.

If you still have some trouble in choosing the combination of subjects that you want to take, consult with us here!

  • Pathway to top universities

It is widely known that A-Level is one of the most popular qualifications studied to get into higher education. Since it is accepted worldwide in over 160 countries, pathway for you to study in top universities overseas such as UK, USA, Singapore, and Australia is widely open.

  • Gain deeper knowledge
