Study Physiotherapy in Malaysia 2020

Sharing is caring :)

Fun Fact: It was the expatriates that brought physiotherapy into Malaysia and later on, Malaysians were sent under Colombo plan scholarship to service the country. Hence the birth of the Malaysian Physiotherapy Association on 19th January 1963 which was registered on 6th August the same year.

But what is physiotherapy? Why did the Malaysian government find it necessary to send her people to Colombo to service the country? Let us dive deeper into this field.

What is physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy also commonly known as physical therapy, is a healthcare profession that treats patients to restore and maintain their mobility, health, fitness and well-being. This profession emphasizes on the ‘whole person’ approach by focusing on both prevention and rehabilitation of physical health.

Physiotherapists study the science of movement. They specialized in hands-on clinical skills to assess, diagnose and treat illness, injury and disability. Not only that, they have the expertise to pinpoint the cause of the patients’ injuries and they will treat the illness using physiotherapy treatments.

So if patients suffer from stroke, movement loss or even sporting injuries, physiotherapists can help them to get back their physical fitness.

Types of Physiotherapy treatments

There are several types of physiotherapy treatments and on this article we will be focusing on:

Whirlpool

This treatment is a form of hydrotherapy and is used to improve circulation, maintain clean wounds or even control inflammation. Whirlpool can be hot or cold depending on the patients’ injuries. This whirlpool bath has a motor that helps the water to move around the treated body part.

Kinesiology Taping

Also called K-Tape, is a treatment where the tape will be adhered to the skin for a few days to relieve pain, facilitate and inhibit muscles and manage swelling or bruising. The tape is made of flexible fabric that stretches and pulls as patients move.

Soft Tissue Mobilisation

This treatment uses hands-on techniques on patients’ muscles and ligaments due to soft tissue injury. It can help relax tense muscles and reduce scar tissue. Besides that, this treatment can also help in reducing swelling, circulate blood flow and relieving pain in athletic injuries.

Range of Motion (ROM) Exercises

This treatment refers to the movement of a joint from its fully flexed position to its fully extended position. There are 3 types of ROM exercises: passive, active assistance exercises and active exercises. Both passive exercises and active assistance exercises require physiotherapists to help and monitor the patients. On the other hand, active exercises patients perform movements without the assistance from physiotherapists.

Traction

Traction is a manual technique to reduce pressure on affected backbone discs that cause pain. This treatment involves manual stretching of the spine where physiotherapists use their hands to create a force on the joints and muscles to widen the spaces between vertebrae. This is to treat low back pain and neck pain to improve mobility in spines.

Reasons to Study Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is one of the five professions that is getting prominent in 2020. Nowadays, people, especially millennials are serious about taking care of their fitness and health. Therefore, there are more people who seek physiotherapists.

2. Make an impact in society

Physiotherapists also play an important role in the healthcare industry, apart from professions such as doctors, dental surgeons or nurses. You will be helping people to get back their functional movements and wellbeing and improve their quality of life. You will see a smile on your patients and you will have a strong satisfaction at the end of the day.

3. Highly Practical

Physiotherapists required research, observation, consultation, and hands-on when treating patients. It is always a different case every day. Therefore, it is recommended to study this course for students who hate desk jobs.

Top Universities to Study Anthropology in Australia 2020

Sharing is caring :)

Have you ever wondered why Asian cultures are different from Western cultures? Or why are there so many Asian subcultures? Or why are the roles of women changed over time? These are the types of questions that you are able to answer when you pursue your education in Anthropology. Many people confuse Anthropology with Sociology. These two terms may sound the same but they are significantly different.

What is Anthropology?

Anthropology is the scientific study of humans, human behaviour, and societies in the past and present. The goal of anthropology is to understand the human evolutionary origins and the great diversity of social existence in the world. There are 4 major fields in Anthropology which will be explained in detail below:

Archaeology Anthropology

This field studies the prehistory and early history of societies. This is to understand the technical, social, and political organization of the past systems. The archaeological record consists of artifacts, biofacts, or even ecofacts.

Biological Anthropology

This field studies the aspects of human and near-human evolution. Near-human refers to monkeys, apes, and other primates. This field also examines fossils and applies their observations to understanding the roots of human behaviour.

Cultural Anthropology

This field focuses on the cultural aspects of human societies all over the world. Their research is mostly on social and political organizations, marriage patterns and kinship systems, subsistence and economic patterns, and religious beliefs of different human societies.

Linguistic Anthropology

This study of the human communication process and focuses their research on understanding things such as the physiology of speech, the structure and function of languages, social and cultural influences on speech and writing, how languages developed over time and how they differ from each other.

How to Remain Healthy During Covid-19 Quarantine

Sharing is caring :)

The first wealth is health - Ralph Waldo Emerson

It is easy to be slacking throughout this self-quarantine period. This is the period where you can sleep without looking at the time or care about how many hours you sleep. However, you must take care of your health during this chaotic time. You do not want to fall sick and worry your loved ones, not especially during the outbreak of Covid-19.

As the famous American essayist, Ralph Waldo Emmerson once said, health is your first wealth. You do not want to take your body for granted because of your young age but to value your health and start taking care of your body. During this Covid-19 period, there are things that we can do to make sure our body is in the healthiest state.

1. Workout at Home

Canva - Woman Doing Yoga Pose on Pink Yoga Mat

No more excuses saying “I’m busy” or “I have no time”. You have the time in the world to move that body because of this quarantine period. It is essential for you to sweat it out, not just because you will lose weight but also for the benefits of your important organs such as the heart and brain. Your heart will benefit the most because working out will stimulate the growth of new blood vessels and thus, lowering blood pressure. Not just that, your brain releases neurotransmitters such as serotonin and endorphins, making you feel good after the workout. There are 4 types of exercise to strengthen your health.

Flexibility

This exercise stretches your muscles and helps your body to be flexible. Examples of this exercise are yoga and pilates. Check out Blogilates website where Cassey Ho provides a FREE workout calendar every month and you can follow the workout on her Youtube channel.

Strength

Strength exercises make your muscles stronger and allow you to carry out daily heavy activities. Normally, you can use dumbbells or resistance bands during the workout. If you are a complete beginner, your body weight would be sufficient enough to help you kick-start strength exercises. Go and do strength exercise with the help of these amazing coaches from Hasfit for free!

Balance

This exercise helps prevent falls which is a common problem for clumsy people and older adults. You can definitely improve your balance by doing the famous Tai Chi exercises so go ahead and follow Dr. Peter Chen’s website and follow his youtube videos.

Endurance

Usually known as aerobic or cardio exercise, it can improve your breathing and heart rate. If you love dancing, this is the perfect exercise for you. Follow the Live Love Party’s youtube to maximize your dancing experience because they will teach you how to zumba.

2. Get Enough Sleep

Canva - Cat Sleeping on Table

As cliche as it sounds, you must get enough sleep in a day. Experts from John Hopkins Medicine said lack of sleep at night time risks your health because it will increase symptoms of depression, migraines and high blood pressure. According to the National Sleep Foundation, the recommended sleeping hours are:

  • teenagers (14-17 years) 8-10 hours of sleep
  • adults (18-64 years) 7-9 hours of sleep.

So do not binge on Netflix so much so you lose your night time sleep.

3. Eat Healthy

Canva - Eating salad

It is easy to get lazy and eat instant noodles during this quarantine period. But please drop that crips, soda and slow down on the fried food. Like the famous saying goes, “You are what you eat”. Increasing your daily intake on veggies and fruits will help to strengthen your immune system. This is crucial as there are no vaccines yet for Covid-19. Check out some of the list of fruits and vegetables to replenish each vitamin deficiency. If you are lacking any of the vitamins below, start adding more on the listed fruits and vegetables on your plate today!
