Get to know Malaysia; Top 5 Malaysian Inventions of all time

Sharing is caring :)

It’s Merdeka month; August! This month is the month we appreciate our country a little bit more than we usually do. So how about we learn more about Malaysia in this entry?

Malaysians are known for their inventions that has become a basic necessity in our lives worldwide. A lot of people probably have no idea of anything that Malaysian have invented throughout the years that has contributed to our country’s image. You’re about to be in awe!

Top 5 Malaysian Inventions

1. Flash Drive

It all started one day in June 2001, Datuk Phua Khien Seng decided to make a research on flash memory technology during his third year of studying electrical and control engineering a year after his company was established (known as Phison Electronics Corp 2000); we probably will not be able to have a flash drive today if it wasn’t because of that. Imagine that.

Flash drive is defined as a data storage device that utilizes flash memory with an integrated USB interface — known for being removable, rewritable and it’s pocket-sized! It’s definitely much lighter and smaller compared to an optical disk or a floppy disk.

Until today, the flash drive has shipped over 600 million every year all around the globe! Not only that, it has reached USD 1.3 billion sales revenue; who would’ve thought?

Lytro camera is a ‘light field camera’ that enables you to pick the focus point in photos.

Ren Ng has always been around cameras; he studied optic and had worked with electrical and mechanical engineering professors in creating cameras. He figured out the way to apply light field technology to cameras in compact-sized packages — and he continued researching even after his PhD, to produce light field cameras that people can take pictures with and it has now become the basic application in developing innovative digital cameras for future generations. Anyone here want to follow in his footsteps?

3. Nehemiah Walls

Nehemiah walls that are nearly everywhere in Malaysia, the ones you see when you’re driving; they’re used everywhere for a good reason.

A Malaysian Engineer, Ir. Dr. Nehemiah Lee Chee Hai is the one behind the brilliant invention of Nehemiah Walls. Back in the 80’s, he worked at the Reinforced Earth Company. It was during his Master’s degree, he decided to research the design and the concepts– and he came up with a system to create retaining walls.

Nehemiah walls is a type of reinforced soil system that incorporates steel bars and precast concrete blocks. It saves costs, time and is more durable if you compare it to other types of walls. You can’t tell me that’s not efficiency at its best.

The Nehemiah Walls is now used worldwide in other countries — Singapore, Australia and Hong Kong. Impressive, right?

Water dispenser is a dispensing machine that processes raw sewage into clean drinking water by incorporating the reverse osmosis method — reducing the waste to nearly net zero.

All the way from Penang, Ooi Seng Chye had come to Kuala Lumpur and worked at Wong Engineering Bhd; a Kuala Lumpur stock exchange company, as a purchasing manager.

Eager to try new things, he created a water dispenser and successfully obtained Cradle funding worth RM150,000 that made him the owner of about 500 RO water dispensing units around Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya under the brand Good Drink. I mean — how did he do that?

Top 5 Universities to Study Electronic & Electrical Engineering in Malaysia 2020

Sharing is caring :)

What is Electronic & Electrical Engineering?

Electrical engineering is related to manage power generation, storage and transmission. Electronics engineering is about electronic appliances, devices and applications. These two types of engineering are similar and their field of expertise often overlapped with each other. Electronics engineers often deal with small electronic parts, circuit boards, wiring, and etc. As for electrical engineers, they deal with bigger components such as generator and storage.

The Degree courses normally will take 4 years to complete the entire programme. Once you finish the undergraduate programme, you will have to choose to pursue postgraduate programme (Master). Additionally, you are able to register with BEM as a Graduate Engineer once you completed a Degree in Electronics and Electrical. This will provide you more career opportunities as a professional engineer.
