Hospitality Management vs Tourism Management – Is There a Difference?

Sharing is caring :)

We often see hospitality management and tourism management degrees being treated as if they’re interchangeable.  Both fields are intertwined, without a doubt.

Look at it this way- hospitality carries all businesses that foster relations between customers. Tourism focuses on travel related activities specifically, and relies on the hospitality industry to build proper relations with customers. The development of one sector expands the opportunities for the other, and vice versa.

Both fields are vigorous, fast-changing and competitive, and require professionals to have excellent communication skills, exceptional interpersonal skills, creativity, diplomacy, conflict and problem resolving abilities with a good understanding of business.

While they do go hand-in-hand, they are not necessarily the same. Careers in both fields require distinct skills and academic qualifications.  If you are considering a career in either field, it is important to understand the differences and see where your skills and interests fit in, to be able to choose the right career path for yourself.

Hospitality Management

Hospitality exists as both a concept and an industry. To put it simply, hospitality as a concept is the relationship between a guest and a host.  Hospitality is a service industry, which encompasses the implementation of well-rounded management practices focused on providing pleasant experiences and comfortable services to guests at establishments such as hotels, restaurants, resorts, clubs and more.

The key focus of professionals working in hospitality management is to secure strong and substantial relationships with the guests by maximising their well-being in order to earn their trust and loyalty and increase the positive brand reputation for the establishments.

The management of hotels, customer service and tourism companies all fall under the job scope of hospitality management graduates. While studying hotel management, students may choose to specialise in hotel operations, F&B departments in hotels and restaurants, human resources and talent management, among others.

Like hospitality, tourism is also both a concept and an industry. According to UNWTO, “tourism comprises the activities of persons travelling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for not more than one consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes”. The tourism industry caters and facilitates goods and services for the pleasure and enjoyment of these travellers, known as tourists.

Tourism management focuses on administering activities related to the multi-faceted tourism industry. It deals with three major components:

  • Accommodation: hotels, motels, resorts, and more living arrangements
  • Accessibility: aeroplanes, cars, cruises and other transportation and travel arrangements
  • Attractions: Historic sites, natural resources, theme parks and other tourist attractions

Tourism management graduates are equipped with training, expertise and skills in aspects such as business administration processes, management principles and concepts, and other tourism related topics such as environmental implications, tourism organisations, motivation to travel, etc.

The Future of the Events Industry - Should You Still Pursue Your Dream Career?

As the Covid-19 pandemic took over the world, we have seen shifts in every dimension of our lives- the pace of change we have experienced in the past year; technological, social, behavioral or otherwise, has almost transcended the entirety of the past decade. Events is one industry that has been uprooted almost entirely.

Understandably, there is a degree of uncertainty when it comes to the future of the industry. Event planners have had to rewrite the entire exhibitions rulebook. Experiences that they have been building throughout their careers were suddenly rendered useless and irrelevant, and they have had to quickly acquire new skills and reimagine the future of events.

Its a New Dawn for the Events Industry - One With More Promise Than We Can Imagine

Over the last year or so, we have seen several companies take their events online, and found creative, innovative ways to connect with the audience. For the foreseeable future, virtual remains the only way to connect, but it is still, pretty much uncharted territory.

In a sea of uncertainty, we can either choose to drown in it, or focus on what we can control. One thing we can do is increase our knowledge of the new technological advancements, get tech-savvy, and familiarise ourselves in virtual technology.

Event planners have been presented with an opportunity to find new ways to balance the virtual world with the online world, and find new tools to stimulate online engagement. We are envisioning a future incorporated with VR and AR elements to enhance personalisation.

Though it is still in its early stages, the new era of the events industry will set the stage for generations to come.

The Landscape of the Events Industry Has Been Turned Inside Out, and Things May Never Go Back to the Way It Was - and That is Not a Bad Thing!

The link between physical space and events is barely hanging on by a thread at this point. We need to prepare for a reality where physical events may never matter again. Perhaps by the time we make it out of this pandemic, the nature of networking will be changed beyond recognition.

As the events industry moves forward, so does technology and the generations attached to it. Event planners have already started moving on from catering to the Millennials to catering to Generation Z – the group of people who were practically raised by the internet. So, it makes perfect sense for the future of the events industry to be hybrid events, or even entirely virtual.

No matter how much change we go through, one thing will always remain constant. People are always looking for new experiences. Event planners are given a chance to push the boundaries and find new ways to convey captivating experiences, specifically tailored to meet the ever-so-changing requirements and preferences of the people.

If you ask us, this is the perfect time to get into the events industry. Become an early adopter, stay so ahead of the curve that the curve becomes a sphere!

SPM之后的升学之路

Sharing is caring :)

After SPM: What’s Next?

Sharing is caring :)

One of your biggest exams, Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia, also known as SPM is done! There are so many things to plan now and might become overwhelming & confusing. 2 essential things that need to be considered thoroughly are the course and the college/university. Here, we provide a handy list of things that hopefully can simplify your options and can find the one that suits you the best!

Finding the right course

There are several aspects that might influence your course choice. Different people may be influenced by different things. So let’s get deeper into it one by one.

1. Know your hobby(ies)

Spent some time to observe what you enjoy to do the most in your spare time. You might find what area you’re interested in better. For instance, if you like to read books related to entrepreneurship and some man’s successful stories, you might be inspired to follow their steps by pursuing a degree in business first.

Another example, if you like to watch law-related tv-shows/movies like Suits, Law and Order, or binge-watching Legally Blonde, you might be interested in pursuing a law degree On the other if you’re more excited with tv-shows related to medicine such as Grey’s Anatomy, The Good Doctor, or Chicago Med, you might probably have an interest into the medical world.

2. Career opportunities

If you are the type of person that likes to plan everything ahead and clearly, you might want to dig in more research on what courses lead to a more rewarding career in the future. In 2020, the Australian Government released the official data for top employing industries which include Healthcare and social assistance, Professional and Scientific Services, and Education and Training.

3. Find something you’re good at

Different than hobbies, which is something that you like to do, other things that can be your consideration is by looking at something that you’re actually good at. Other than being realistic, it can be easier for you to follow the things that you already know the basics beforehand. For example, you’re good at math and dealing with money, maybe accounting can be your course options. Another example, you’re good at listening to other’s problems and can give a really helpful solution, a degree in psychology might be perfect for you.

Finding the right program & university

After you are down with several options of study areas, you are now entitled to choose the perfect programs out of plenty of programs available out there. Knowing the one that suits you the best might be a challenge. That’s why we’re here to give you a rough idea of some of the most popular pre-university programs in Malaysia.

Sharing is caring :)
gray-standard-color-book-near-green-eraser-159045

When choosing a major for your future, you’ll probably look at what you love and enjoy doing the most. And apparently, you like giving a makeover to an indoor space. But then, you got into a dilemma–there are similar options for your preference, but you don’t know the difference! It’s down between Interior architecture and Interior design

Worry not! Here, we provide everything you need to know about both Interior Design and Interior Architecture.

What is Interior Architecture?

red-and-brown-floral-stair-carpet-161758

Apart from the misconception of the similarity between interior design and interior architecture, they both have the main difference. An interior architecture course is a hybrid field of study, bringing interior design and architecture together in a single discipline. It takes a good knowledge of building regulations, and an understanding of the structure of buildings, in order to make projects safe, habitable, and functional. Different from interior design, interior architecture needs to consider pretty much everything that has to do with both the building&construction and also the interior space.

What is Interior Design?

deborah-cortelazzi-gREquCUXQLI-unsplash

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, Interior design is the art or practice of planning, creating, and supervising the design and execution of architectural interiors and their furnishings. The interior design courses comprise of a more technical perspective rather than practical since an interior designer doesn’t have an architectural certification.

The role of an interior designer doesn’t stop there. Since their job is to help create functional interior space, they need to understand how the inhabitants will use each room and also consider light, sound and other design aspects. Interior design also requires some of the tech-savviness, as far as the use of 2D and 3D software applications is concerned. Computer-aided design (CAD) is key in contemporary interior design, as well as building information modeling (BIM).

Recommended universities to study interior design

1. INTI University (in collaboration with Sheffield Hallam University, UK)

General intakes: Apr, Aug

Campus: INTI College Subang

Which Pre-Uni Should You Choose: Foundation, A-Level, SAM, or AUSMAT?

Sharing is caring :)

What's a Pre-University program?

Choosing the right path of study is crucial for the future. If you have taken your SPM/UEC, the next thing to think about is: what’s next? If your next decision is to pursue a degree, then the next step you are most likely to take is doing a Pre-University program.

A Pre-University program is a preparatory course that aims to provide students with essential skills and knowledge that helps them to handle the challenges of an undergraduate course.

In Malaysia, there are numerous different pre-university programs that are offered by universities and it can surely be challenging to find one that best suits you. It is necessary to spend some time finding out more about each type of pre-university program so that your transition into a bachelor’s degree will be much easier. That’s why here, we’ll help you clarify different pre-university programs such as:

  1. Foundation Program
  2. A-Level
  3. South Australian Matriculation (SAM) and Australian Matriculation (AUSMAT)

and get you a better understanding of each of them!

Foundation Program

What is Foudation?

Certain qualification does not allow students to enter University directly. So, the Foundation program will be the key for the students to enter the University. At the same time, pursuing foundation program helps students to build up their understanding towards the field that they are interested in. For international students, it helps them to improve their English language skills while learning the basics of their field. Foundation Program comes with several benefits.

Benefits of Foundation Program

  • Short Study Duration

Usually, the University foundation program will only take 12 months to be completed. It is considered as a short duration because the alternative option which is the A-Level, will take 18-24 months to be completed. Shorter the duration means lesser the cost. The average price for the Foundation Program in Malaysia is RM 16,000 but it may vary at each university.

  • Opportunity to settle into tertiary studies

Tertiary studies are significantly different than how we are used to studying in school. The style of learning will be more independent and the interaction with lecturers will be lower. It could be a challenge for the students but it will be a chance for them to adapt to the changes and prepare themselves to continue with their tertiary studies.

  • Study area

The Foundation program is short and focused on a particular area of study. It will prepare the students with the basics of their chosen field. Subjects that the students learn in this program will be the fundamental components of their chosen area of study.

Types of Foundation Program in Malaysia

There are many top private universities in Malaysia that offers different foundation programs. There are some foundation programs like engineering and science which are available in many Universities and there are some rare programs such as the arts and creative media fields that are only available in certain Universities. Therefore, knowing which program suits you the most is important. The entry requirement may vary for different programs and different places. These are some of the Foundation Program available in Malaysia:

What is A-Level?

A-Level, short for ‘Advanced Level’, is a widely recognized pre-university program that is based on the UK education system and is offered in Malaysia. The program can take up to 18 months depending on when you start your studies. It can be said as the “STPM” of UK since both are equivalent to other pre-university programs. Thus, they still have some differences. As A-Level is 100% exam based, STPM consist of school-based assessments (20–40% of final score) plus final exams (60–80% of final score).

In Malaysia, A-Level courses offered are either governed by the Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) or Edexcel examination boards.

The A level subject is divided into two levels: Advanced Subsidiary (AS) and Advanced Two (A2) levels. Each of them contributes 50% of the final grade. The A level programs offer two streams – Science and Arts. It offered various subjects from Biology, Math, Chemistry, Computer Science, Accounting, to Law. You have the freedom to choose the subjects that you want to take. Universities usually required you to take 3-4 subjects only, since it is better for you to focus and concentrate on fewer subjects and then do well on them.
