Sharing is caring :)

什么是A-Levels?

A-level

  1. Assessment and Qualifications Alliance (AQA)
  2. Oxford, Cambridge and RSA Examinations (OCR)
  3. Edexcel (Edexcel Pearson – London Examinations)
  4. Welsh Joint Education Committee (WJEC)
  5. Council for the Curriculum, Examinations & Assessment (CCEA)

A-level?

A-Levels

A-Levels:

A-Levels:

A-Levels Program and Scholarships in Malaysia

Sharing is caring :)

It’s no joke when it comes to pre-university programs, there are plenty of choices out there and most of the time students end up confused on which one to choose. It doesn’t happen often but sometimes students tend to take the wrong path and end up not meeting the entry requirement for their preferred degree program. This leaves the students devastated and the money and time invested in the program are redundant. But fret not, in this article, we will be explaining in detail about one of the most chosen pre-university programs by Malaysian students, that has given them the opportunity to enroll in top universities both abroad and locally.

What is A-Levels?

Advanced Based Qualifications or widely known as A-Levels, the most chosen pre-university program by young Malaysian students that opens up the gate of opportunities for students to progress into higher education. The program is based on the British education system and the A-Levels program in Malaysia is governed by two main examination bodies: the Cambridge Assessment International Education and Edexcel

Although in Malaysia the two main boards for the A-Level program, there are several other assessment boards for A-Levels too such as:

Types of A-Level Assessment Bodies

  • Council for the Curriculum, Examination and Assessment (CCEA)
  • Assessment and Qualification Alliance (AQA)
  • Oxford, Cambridge and RSA Examination (OCR)
  • Welsh Joint Education Committee (WJE)

The program is 100% exam based, similar to SPM. It might be a relief that you would only need to focus on 3 main subjects instead of 9. But don’t get your hopes too high up because it is also known that it’s tough to score straight As for the A-Levels program. However, the good news is that you’ll have full control over the subjects you chose to pursue during your A-Levels.

Signing up for A-Levels gives you a taste of what university would be as throughout the course you would be gaining in-depth knowledge of the subjects you choose to take. It will definitely be a different experience from school as you’ll not be spoon-fed but being taught how to be independent and think logically which will help you present your ideas better and prepare you for your degree program in the future.

A-Levels Program Structure

The A-Level program is structured into two parts; the first part being Advanced Subsidiary (AS Level) and the second part known as A2.

  • Advanced Subsidiary (AS Level): Forms the first of the program and is the foundation of A-Levels. In this part, you’ll learn the basics of the subjects you’ve chosen, more like an introduction level to get to know the subjects better.
  • A2: Forms the second half of the program, in which you will be covering the more complex side of the chosen subjects.

A-Levels Grading System

At the end of each level, students will need to sit for exams to test their knowledge and understanding of the subjects that they have taken. Each level will contribute 50% towards the final grade.

However, the main difference between the Cambridge A-Levels and Edexcel A-Levels is in the event that a student would want to repeat a subject in order to improve his/her marks.  In the Edexcel A-Levels, you would not need to repeat the entire level but the subject only. Only the highest mark will be taken into account whereas for the Cambridge A-Levels you would need to repeat the entire level both AS and A2

Duration of A-Levels

The entire A-Level course averagely takes 18 months to complete from start to the end. The intake dates and examination dates vary according to the institution. However, the exam period is only once a year both for AS Level and A2.

What Subjects Should You take for A-Levels?

There are over 50 subjects offered by the Cambridge International Advanced Level and around 40 subjects by the Edexcel. You’ll be spoilt for choices and might be even confused about which subject to choose, however, not all the subjects will be offered at colleges/ universities in Malaysia. You must pick the subjects wisely to create an easier path for you to progress into your degree program.

Some of the Subjects Offered in A-Levels are:

  • Physics
  • Chemistry
  • Biology
  • Law
  • Mathematics
  • Further Mathematics
  • English
  • Accounting
  • Economic
  • Psychology
  • Computer Science
Subject availability depends on colleges/ universities, for more information please contact Excel Education

Please note that these are just examples of the combination of subjects that can be taken; subject availability depends on the college/ university; for further information please contact Excel Education

There are plenty of art and science subjects that you can choose from, but again it all depends on which type of degree you would like to pursue in the future. If you’re not quite sure yet on which degree program you would like to pursue;

Tips for Choosing the A-Levels Subjects Combination

  • Choose subjects you’ll excel in: It’s no joke when it comes to a 100% exam based course. You’ll be spending most of your time with your nose in books, pulling an all-nighter so why not choose a subject that you might enjoy.
  • Choose subjects that are relevant to your degree: Since A-Levels provides you with the freedom to pick a combination of subjects for your degree program, you must choose the right ones as some subjects might allow you to change courses if you change your mind; therefore, all your hard work would not go to waste.
  • Pick subjects which provide more comprehensive degree options: Being cited as one of the most flexible pre-university programs and widely accepted by universities worldwide, you would not be pressured into choosing a degree program, if you have not made up your mind yet. The rule here is to keep your options broad by taking some of the flexible subjects which are frequently required for admission in top universities

For further information, please contact Excel Education

Why take A-Levels?

Opens a gate of opportunity: Since the program is well known, it is widely accepted by many top universities around the world. It is also known to be the golden ticket for those who would like to pursue their degree in the UK and many other countries such as Australia, Singapore, and Canada

Specialized subjects : Unlike foundation programs where you would be learning new sets of subjects every semester, A-Level only focuses on the subjects that you’ve chosen.

Resources/Study Materials: There are plenty of resources for A-Levels students ranging from past year papers and lecture notes, which could help you prepare better for the exams.

Who should take up A-Levels?

You should take up A-Levels if:

  • You’re comfortable with 100% exam based courses
  • Aiming to apply for competitive degree programs such as Medicine or Law
  • You have plans to study your degree in the UK
  • If you like being in a structured program

You shouldn't take up A-Levels if:

  • You prefer coursework over the examination
  • You don’t want to learn a wide range of subjects
  • You do not have plans to study abroad.
  • You’re planning to take up more hands-on degrees such as Hospitality, Culinary Arts and so on.

General Entry Requirement for A-Levels

SPM/ IGCSE

Minimum 5 Credits (including English and relevant subjects to the course)

UEC

Minimum 3Bs including English and relevant subjects to the course)

The requirements may vary among colleges/universities, for inquiries on other entry requirements, contact Excel Education.

Being similar to other pre-university courses such as Canadian Pre- University (CPU) and STPM, the entry requirement for A-Levels in Malaysia requires at least 5 credits from SPM or IGCSE students. In the event, if you like to pursue subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Further Mathematics, you would need to have a subject prerequisite which means that you would need to achieve the minimum entry grade for the subjects during your SPM/ IGCSE.

Best Colleges to Study Australian Matriculation (SAM/SACE, Ausmat) in Malaysia

Sharing is caring :)

What is Australian Matriculation? What are the major Australian Matriculation programmes offered in Malaysia? This article will give you a more thorough idea of what these programmes are about and some suggestions of colleges in Malaysia which are offering the programme.

If you have just completed your SPM or IGCSE exam and plan to study a bachelor’s degree overseas or even in a private university in Malaysia, the Australian Matriculation programme will be a good choice for you. Australian Matriculation focuses more on the coursework, as compared to A-Level’s 100% exams. There are two different types of Australian Matriculation namely South Australian Matriculation (SAM) or SACE International and AUSMAT which is also known as Western Australian Certification of Education (WACE).

Why Study Australian Matriculation

Ausmat and SAM/SACE are at the same level of qualification as other pre-university programmes such as STPM, A-Level, Canadian Pre-University (CPU).  Ausmat and SAM/SACE are based on the Australian education system and are equivalent to an Australian Year 12 qualification. The following reasons might help you to gain a better understanding of Australian Matriculation and why you should consider taking it.

1. SAM/SACE and Ausmat offers high flexibility

Both SAM/SACE and Ausmat require students to choose 5 subjects, the students will have the flexibility to take subjects they’re most interested in, it can be purely science or art-related subjects, or even a combination of both. It offers great flexibility for students who want to try out different subjects at the same time and without going too in-depth. SAM/SACE and Ausmat is a great programme to help build a strong foundation in your chosen subject.

2. SAM/SACE and Ausmat leave your options open

One of the benefits of taking pre-university courses is that it doesn’t restrict you to continue your study to specific degrees at specific universities. It is suitable for students who are still uncertain of what degree they want to pursue. Unlike foundation programmes, SAM/SACE and Ausmat leave your options open to pursue a broad range of degrees after completing the programme.

3. Recognised by different countries oversea

SAM/SACE and Ausmat are not only accepted in Australia, for students who would like to further their studies in other countries such as the UK, USA, New Zealand, Singapore and Canada, SAM/SACE and Ausmat are also internationally recognised. Of course, students can also choose to continue their studies in any private universities in Malaysia if they want.

4. Balanced between exam and assessment

SAM/SACE and Ausmat will be a good option for you if you don’t like exams. Some students do not like the idea of A-Level because of its 100% exam-based system. In SAM/SACE and Ausmat, your coursework performance including quizzes, tests and assignments will be taken into account, so you can master your learning materials and coursework to improve your grades.

Programme Structure & Differences between SAM/SACE and Ausmat

SAM/SACE and Ausmat are unlike A-Level, it is important for you to continuously keep up with your coursework throughout the programme duration by completing the school-based assessment which includes quizzes, tests, assignments, presentations and practical tests.

Both SAM/SACE and Ausmat include a combination of school-based assessment and external examination. SAM/SACE covers more coursework than exams compared to Ausmat, while Ausmat has a more even split between coursework and exams. They are pretty similar, however, there are still some slight differences between AUSMAT and SAM/SACE.

It is important for you to manage your time wisely and have good self-discipline in order to juggle different assignments and learning materials at the same time.

It will be the student’s choice to choose what subject combination to study, and it is an important decision to make as it might affect your choice of degree in the future. The programmes are within the duration of 10 – 12 months and the students are required to take 5 subjects.

After SPM: What’s Next?

Sharing is caring :)

One of your biggest exams, Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia, also known as SPM is done! There are so many things to plan now and might become overwhelming & confusing. 2 essential things that need to be considered thoroughly are the course and the college/university. Here, we provide a handy list of things that hopefully can simplify your options and can find the one that suits you the best!

Finding the right course

There are several aspects that might influence your course choice. Different people may be influenced by different things. So let’s get deeper into it one by one.

1. Know your hobby(ies)

Spent some time to observe what you enjoy to do the most in your spare time. You might find what area you’re interested in better. For instance, if you like to read books related to entrepreneurship and some man’s successful stories, you might be inspired to follow their steps by pursuing a degree in business first.

Another example, if you like to watch law-related tv-shows/movies like Suits, Law and Order, or binge-watching Legally Blonde, you might be interested in pursuing a law degree On the other if you’re more excited with tv-shows related to medicine such as Grey’s Anatomy, The Good Doctor, or Chicago Med, you might probably have an interest into the medical world.

2. Career opportunities

If you are the type of person that likes to plan everything ahead and clearly, you might want to dig in more research on what courses lead to a more rewarding career in the future. In 2020, the Australian Government released the official data for top employing industries which include Healthcare and social assistance, Professional and Scientific Services, and Education and Training.

3. Find something you’re good at

Different than hobbies, which is something that you like to do, other things that can be your consideration is by looking at something that you’re actually good at. Other than being realistic, it can be easier for you to follow the things that you already know the basics beforehand. For example, you’re good at math and dealing with money, maybe accounting can be your course options. Another example, you’re good at listening to other’s problems and can give a really helpful solution, a degree in psychology might be perfect for you.

Finding the right program & university

After you are down with several options of study areas, you are now entitled to choose the perfect programs out of plenty of programs available out there. Knowing the one that suits you the best might be a challenge. That’s why we’re here to give you a rough idea of some of the most popular pre-university programs in Malaysia.

Which Pre-Uni Should You Choose: Foundation, A-Level, SAM, or AUSMAT?

Sharing is caring :)

What's a Pre-University program?

Choosing the right path of study is crucial for the future. If you have taken your SPM/UEC, the next thing to think about is: what’s next? If your next decision is to pursue a degree, then the next step you are most likely to take is doing a Pre-University program.

A Pre-University program is a preparatory course that aims to provide students with essential skills and knowledge that helps them to handle the challenges of an undergraduate course.

In Malaysia, there are numerous different pre-university programs that are offered by universities and it can surely be challenging to find one that best suits you. It is necessary to spend some time finding out more about each type of pre-university program so that your transition into a bachelor’s degree will be much easier. That’s why here, we’ll help you clarify different pre-university programs such as:

  1. Foundation Program
  2. A-Level
  3. South Australian Matriculation (SAM) and Australian Matriculation (AUSMAT)

and get you a better understanding of each of them!

Foundation Program

What is Foudation?

Certain qualification does not allow students to enter University directly. So, the Foundation program will be the key for the students to enter the University. At the same time, pursuing foundation program helps students to build up their understanding towards the field that they are interested in. For international students, it helps them to improve their English language skills while learning the basics of their field. Foundation Program comes with several benefits.

Tertiary studies are significantly different than how we are used to studying in school. The style of learning will be more independent and the interaction with lecturers will be lower. It could be a challenge for the students but it will be a chance for them to adapt to the changes and prepare themselves to continue with their tertiary studies.

  • Study area

The program can take up to 18 months depending on when you start your studies. It can be said as the “STPM” of UK since both are equivalent to other pre-university programs. Thus, they still have some differences. As A-Level is 100% exam based, STPM consist of school-based assessments (20–40% of final score) plus final exams (60–80% of final score).

In Malaysia, A-Level courses offered are either governed by the Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) or Edexcel examination boards.

The A level subject is divided into two levels: Advanced Subsidiary (AS) and Advanced Two (A2) levels. Each of them contributes 50% of the final grade. The A level programs offer two streams – Science and Arts. It offered various subjects from Biology, Math, Chemistry, Computer Science, Accounting, to Law. You have the freedom to choose the subjects that you want to take.
