A-Levels Program and Scholarships in Malaysia

Sharing is caring :)

It’s no joke when it comes to pre-university programs, there are plenty of choices out there and most of the time students end up confused on which one to choose. It doesn’t happen often but sometimes students tend to take the wrong path and end up not meeting the entry requirement for their preferred degree program. This leaves the students devastated and the money and time invested in the program are redundant. But fret not, in this article, we will be explaining in detail about one of the most chosen pre-university programs by Malaysian students, that has given them the opportunity to enroll in top universities both abroad and locally.

What is A-Levels?

Advanced Based Qualifications or widely known as A-Levels, the most chosen pre-university program by young Malaysian students that opens up the gate of opportunities for students to progress into higher education. The program is based on the British education system and the A-Levels program in Malaysia is governed by two main examination bodies: the Cambridge Assessment International Education and Edexcel

Although in Malaysia the two main boards for the A-Level program, there are several other assessment boards for A-Levels too such as:

Types of A-Level Assessment Bodies

  • Council for the Curriculum, Examination and Assessment (CCEA)
  • Assessment and Qualification Alliance (AQA)
  • Oxford, Cambridge and RSA Examination (OCR)
  • Welsh Joint Education Committee (WJE)

The program is 100% exam based, similar to SPM. It might be a relief that you would only need to focus on 3 main subjects instead of 9. But don’t get your hopes too high up because it is also known that it’s tough to score straight As for the A-Levels program. However, the good news is that you’ll have full control over the subjects you chose to pursue during your A-Levels.

Signing up for A-Levels gives you a taste of what university would be as throughout the course you would be gaining in-depth knowledge of the subjects you choose to take. It will definitely be a different experience from school as you’ll not be spoon-fed but being taught how to be independent and think logically which will help you present your ideas better and prepare you for your degree program in the future.

A-Levels Program Structure

The A-Level program is structured into two parts; the first part being Advanced Subsidiary (AS Level) and the second part known as A2.

  • Advanced Subsidiary (AS Level): Forms the first of the program and is the foundation of A-Levels. In this part, you’ll learn the basics of the subjects you’ve chosen, more like an introduction level to get to know the subjects better.
  • A2: Forms the second half of the program, in which you will be covering the more complex side of the chosen subjects.

A-Levels Grading System

At the end of each level, students will need to sit for exams to test their knowledge and understanding of the subjects that they have taken. Each level will contribute 50% towards the final grade.

However, the main difference between the Cambridge A-Levels and Edexcel A-Levels is in the event that a student would want to repeat a subject in order to improve his/her marks.  In the Edexcel A-Levels, you would not need to repeat the entire level but the subject only. Only the highest mark will be taken into account whereas for the Cambridge A-Levels you would need to repeat the entire level both AS and A2

You must pick the subjects wisely to create an easier path for you to progress into your degree program.

Some of the Subjects Offered in A-Levels are:

  • Chemistry

There are plenty of art and science subjects that you can choose from, but again it all depends on which type of degree you would like to pursue in the future. If you’re not quite sure yet on which degree program you would like to pursue;

Tips for Choosing the A-Levels Subjects Combination

  • Choose subjects you’ll excel in: It’s no joke when it comes to a 100% exam based course. You’ll be spending most of your time with your nose in books, pulling an all-nighter so why not choose a subject that you might enjoy.
  • Choose subjects that are relevant to your degree: Since A-Levels provides you with the freedom to pick a combination of subjects for your degree program, you must choose the right ones as some subjects might allow you to change courses if you change your mind; therefore, all your hard work would not go to waste.
  • Pick subjects which provide more comprehensive degree options: Being cited as one of the most flexible pre-university programs and widely accepted by universities worldwide, you would not be pressured into choosing a degree program, if you have not made up your mind yet. The rule here is to keep your options broad by taking some of the flexible subjects which are frequently required for admission in top universities

Why take A-Levels?

Opens a gate of opportunity: Since the program is well known, it is widely accepted by many top universities around the world. It is also known to be the golden ticket for those who would like to pursue their degree in the UK and many other countries such as Australia, Singapore, and Canada

Specialized subjects : Unlike foundation programs where you would be learning new sets of subjects every semester, A-Level only focuses on the subjects that you’ve chosen.

Resources/Study Materials: There are plenty of resources for A-Levels students ranging from past year papers and lecture notes, which could help you prepare better for the exams.

Who should take up A-Levels?

You should take up A-Levels if:

  • You’re comfortable with 100% exam based courses
  • Aiming to apply for competitive degree programs such as Medicine or Law
  • You have plans to study your degree in the UK
  • If you like being in a structured program

You shouldn't take up A-Levels if:

  • You prefer coursework over the examination
  • You don’t want to learn a wide range of subjects
  • You do not have plans to study abroad.
  • You’re planning to take up more hands-on degrees such as Hospitality, Culinary Arts and so on.

General Entry Requirement for A-Levels

SPM/ IGCSE

Minimum 5 Credits (including English and relevant subjects to the course)

UEC

Minimum 3Bs including English and relevant subjects to the course)

The requirements may vary among colleges/universities, for inquiries on other entry requirements, contact Excel Education.

Being similar to other pre-university courses such as Canadian Pre- University (CPU) and STPM, the entry requirement for A-Levels in Malaysia requires at least 5 credits from SPM or IGCSE students. In the event, if you like to pursue subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Further Mathematics, you would need to have a subject prerequisite which means that you would need to achieve the minimum entry grade for the subjects during your SPM/ IGCSE.

Everything you Need to Know to Become a Graphic Designer in Malaysia

Sharing is caring :)

Have you had the knack of just scribbling and doodling while studying or even when you’re listening to a lecture? Many of us push those silly doodling aside and pursue something much more serious for our tertiary education. But do you know, according to Malaysia’s critical occupational list 2020, graphic designers were among the top 10 most demanded jobs in Malaysia?

However, although acquiring the essential skills, the creativity that fuels art, a particular foundation is needed for a designer to succeed in the field. Therefore in this article, we will list everything you need to know about becoming a graphic designer in Malaysia.

What is Graphic Design?

Graphic design is a profession where graphic designers often create visual content to communicate their message to their targeted audience. They use typography, illustrations, symbols and colors to create a visual representation of ideas.

For example, when you’re visiting a local grocery store, just stand and look around, there would be plenty of items that have various colors and designs. Most of the time, there will be one product that catches your eye even when it’s new, that is how important a role graphic design plays in our everyday life.

Graphic design optimizes an organization/clients marketing efforts across all marketing channels. This dynamic and exciting field opens up opportunities in various industries where you’ll get to exercise your creativity and personality through graphics.

What are the Skills Needed to Become a Graphic Designer?

Creativity: The most fundamental skill needed to survive being a graphic designer is creativity. Graphic designers need to be creative thinkers as they will be frequently asked to come up with ideas that are conveyed through text and images. For example, they might have to promote a company’s mission through a website or design an image that helps sell products, all of this involves creative problem-solving skills

Communication: In this work line, you’ll be meeting plenty of clients and customers that always change their mind about the designs. You’ll need to be able to communicate well to pass the ideas/message to your clients.

Besides that, being a graphic designer means you’ll be working with many of your team members from different departments. It’s crucial that you can communicate well in order not to give out the wrong message. It’s definitely a plus point if you’re able to communicate and work well with others as it will send out a statement that you’re a team player.

Presentation Skills: Along with communication, presentation skills also play a crucial part in a graphic designer’s life. As you board on projects, your clients will be expecting you to present to them your ideas from the very beginning to the end of the project. Therefore, having it’s not an option to have cold feet during a presentation as it might

Patience: As a graphic designer, you’ll be asked to make multiple changes to your designs even though it might not make sense. Sadly, it is your job to comply with your clients to ensure that they are given what they have asked for.

Technology: Graphic designers need to be on their toes and master various forms of technology as it’s constantly updated. They have to be comfortable using multiple different designing software such as Adobe.

Time Management: Many graphic designers are constantly juggling between multiple projects, therefore time management is very crucial in this industry. Graphic designers should be able to multitask, juggle several projects at a time and meet all the deadlines.

Who Should Study Graphic Design?

If you want to be your own boss: Most graphic designers work as freelancers after several years of working with firms. They acquire the working experience and start off later by working by themselves as freelance designers and eventually becoming advisors for companies.

If you want to get paid for being creative: Graphic designers get paid for expressing their creativity, although it might sound easy, it’s not. A graphic designer always needs to ‘think outside of the box’ to solve briefs as they can’t repeat the same design.

If you’re someone who gets bored quickly: Life of a graphic designer is never dull as you’ll always be up with a new challenge. You could be designing menus for a restaurant one day and the next, creating layouts for a mobile app.

If you want to work in a wide range of industry: Every industry needs visual communication and good graphic designers. There are endless possibilities for graphic designers to work either with clients or organizations.

What are the Common Subjects Taught in Graphic Design?

Graphic design is a very wide course to pursue, which can lead you to endless possibilities and job opportunities. Only being equipped with creativity is definitely not adequate to get through to becoming a graphic designer as they hold the responsibility of creating powerful visuals that more often need more skills. There are various factors that play a role in producing a good quality of visual such as typography, colour schemes, fonts, word choices and many more.

Here are some common subjects that are taught throughout the Diploma and Degree program of Graphic Design:

  • Advertising Principle
  • Creative Thinking
  • History of Arts
  • Photography
  • Typography
  • Web Design
  • Principle of Drawings

Career Paths for a Graphic Designer

  • Art Director: Takes charge of the visual style and content in magazines, newspaper, and product packaging. They create designs and direct other artists to develop each contributing piece.
  • Creative Director: Determines the creative vision of a project. They make sure the overall look stays on track by leading their team through the steps to create something such as an advertising campaign.
  • User Experience (UX) Designer: Work to make products, processes and services seamless and enjoyable for users. They often think about how the product feels and how the users will use it.
  • Marketing Specialist: Collects and analyzes data on target customers, initiates marketing campaigns, measures the effectiveness of marketing and creates strategies to promote the company’s product or services.

To officially become a graphic designer, it usually takes around 3 years after completing Pre – University (foundation, A-Levels, etc). However, students can also opt into signing up for a Diploma program which takes roughly around 2 –  2.5 years to complete and provides a direct entry into Year 2 of the degree program. The advantages of taking a Diploma program is that upon completion, students would have the choice of either joining the working industry or progress into a Graphic Design degree program with a direct entry into Year 2.

Best Colleges/ Universities to Study Early Childhood Education Courses in Malaysia

Sharing is caring :)

The first several years of a baby is an extremely crucial time in their lives as it’s when they first learn how to interact with others, including peers, teachers, and parents, it’s also the time where their interest will start to develop and stay with them throughout their lives.

It’s a common misperception that early childhood education is only about learning essential skills. But it is much more than that, it’s a time when children learn crucial social and emotional skills and a partnership is formed between the child, parents and teachers. When this is done successfully, it lays the groundwork for continuing growth throughout the child’s education.

What is Early Childhood Education?

Early childhood, defined as the period from birth to eight years old, is a time of remarkable growth, especially with brain development at its peak. During this stage, children are highly influenced by the environment and the people that surround them.

Early childhood education (ECE) is more than just preparation for primary school. Still, it aims at the holistic development of a child’s social, emotional, cognitive and physical needs to build a stable and broad foundation of lifelong learning.

What are the Skills Needed in Early Childhood Education?

CreativityChildren are sponges at this early age, but they are also new to learning. Early childhood educators must be able to communicate with young learners on their level, including being able to break complex subjects into easily digestible pieces. They must be able offer details about classroom progress to parents so they are aware of their child’s performance and achievement level. Communication helps parents identify teachable moments in everyday situations and boost their child’s kindergarten readiness.

Communication Skills: Communication is vital as an early childhood educator. Not only on the basis of communicating the progress of children to their parents but they should also be able to understand and communicate with the children on their level

Organizational Skills: While it might look easy taking care of a bunch of kids, managing a classroom of young kids on sugar rush requires more organizational skills than you require. You’ll need to show up with your lessons planned with your props and always be on the lookout for the kids to in case something happens.

Patience: Children are the epitome of the energizer bunny, they’re full of energy and never seem to run out of it. They could be running even when the class is being conducted therefore being an early childhood educator requires a lot of patience.

Why Should You Study Early Childhood Education?

Being around young kids is definitely challenging, as they are not easy to manage. In Early Childhood Education, one has to have the patience as big as a mountain and the dedication and passion of teaching and moulding young minds of the future.

You have a strong bond among children: If you’re someone who does not get tired of seeing children and you absolutely love to be around them every day even when they drive you up to the wall, then early childhood education might be the right path for you.

You want to be shaping young minds: Early childhood educators have a genuine opportunity to make a difference in young lives and influence the younger generation. They get to ensure that children get off a good start in their lives.

You enjoy excellent job security: It’s a great time to consider a career in an early childhood education as it has strong growth and is one of the most in-demand professions among the others.

Career opportunities are endless: There are various professional roles in the industry, so there’s always room for you to grow and challenge yourself in the industry.

What are the Major-Subjects Taught in Early Childhood Education?

Child Development: Refers to the studies of the mental, physical, emotional, social and intellectual development a child goes through from birth till adulthood. Students will learn about effective parenting, teaching and nurturing of children.

Learning and Play: Play-based learning helps a child develop holistically through social-emotional learning, developing confidence and motivation and practising cognitive skills.

Children safety & Nutritional Skills: Early childhood is when children develop lifestyle habits that can lead to good health. Students would learn the importance of healthy eating and strategies to incorporate acceptable health practices into classroom activities.

Language & Literacy: Covers literacy theories as well as strategies for encouraging literacy in young children. Students may also become skilled at identifying problems among children who have difficulty reading comprehension.

Develop Age-Appropriate Curriculum: Learn how to develop lesson plans, activities, and learning objectives relevant to young children. They know methods used by children to organize, retain and recall information.

How Do I Become a Qualified EarlyChildhood Educator?

A degree in Early Childhood Education typically takes 3 years after completing Pre-University (e.g: A- Level, SACE, etc) or Foundation. However, students can choose to go into a Diploma program, which takes about 2 to 2.5 years to complete. Upon completing you can either choose to work or continue with a degree program in Early Childhood Education with a direct entry into Year 2.

SPM之后的升学之路

Sharing is caring :)

I thank life for happening, thank every twist and turn, I believe that there is a reason for every single thing, a reason for every worry and concern.

Scholarships for SPM, IGCSE, A-Level and UEC Students in Malaysia 2021

Sharing is caring :)

Cost is a major factor in the student’s decisions when choosing a university. We understand that the cost of education can have a long-term impact on one’s life, therefore it is important to sort out the budget when making the decision. Scholarships can be a good financial aid option for students to get financial support in their studies, and the best part is they don’t have to be repaid! There are different scholarships provided by different private universities and colleges in Malaysia.

If you have thought of applying for a scholarship but have no idea where to begin or how to apply, this article will give you some ideas and also some recommendations!

Things to consider before applying for a scholarship

1. Do your research

After you have gotten your results, it is time for you to decide on which university to attend, what course to take, and not to forget to look for scholarships to ease your parents’ financial burden. There are various types of scholarships provided by the public sectors, private companies, and universities with their own specific scholarships. It is important to do your research and find out which type of scholarship suits you the best. Because different institutions have different requirements and offer different courses. Feel free to contact us for a free consultation!

2. Be mindful of the closing date

Just like the semester start date and application closing date, scholarship application also has its own deadlines, and it varies depending on the course and the institution. It is important to always be aware of the deadlines for the scholarships you are applying for. Institutions with a high volume of applications are likely to overlook late applications. Therefore it is important to mark the date, so that you will not miss it.

3. What they are looking for

It is essential to know exactly what the scholarship provider is looking for when considering who they will select as the recipient. Some universities require interviews before choosing the right scholarship holder, therefore it is important for you to showcase yourself and articulate why you think you are the best candidate for the scholarship.

Different institutions might require different qualifications. The common ones would be SPM or IGCSE. This article will also talk about the types of scholarships available for different qualifications.

As mentioned above there are different types of scholarships provided by different sectors. In this article, we are giving you a list of scholarships available mainly provided by private universities/colleges.

What is Artificial Intelligence (AI)?

Artificial Intelligence is defined as an extensive variety of computer science branches related to the creation of smart machines that have the ability to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence.

AI typically breaks down into four elements; thinking humanly, thinking rationally, acting humanly, and acting rationally.

Just like every other thing, AI has different categories. Most of them are powered by machine learning, some of them are powered by deep learning, and the rest are powered by rulesit all depends on the function of each one of them.

Categories of Artificial Intelligence (AI)

  • Narrow AI (also known as weak AI)

Narrow AI is built as an AI that focuses on performing a single task extremely well. It operates under a lot of constraints and limitations.

Examples of Narrow AI:

  1. Google Search
  2. Siri, Alexa
  3. Image recognition software
  • Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) (also known as strong AI)

AGI is an AI that we normally see in sci-fi movies; a human-like robot that has general intelligence in solving problems.

Unfortunately, AGI doesn’t exist — some experts have predicted that AGI may be developed by 2030 or 2045, however, some of the conservatives claimed that it might take us a century, or it might not be possible to develop an AGI at all.

What is Foudation?

Certain qualification does not allow students to enter University directly. So, the Foundation program will be the key for the students to enter the University. At the same time, pursuing foundation program helps students to build up their understanding towards the field that they are interested in. For international students, it helps them to improve their English language skills while learning the basics of their field. Foundation Program comes with several benefits.

Benefits of Foundation Program

  • Short Study Duration

Usually, the University foundation program will only take 12 months to be completed. It is considered as a short duration because the alternative option which is the A-Level, will take 18-24 months to be completed. Shorter the duration means lesser the cost. Tertiary studies are significantly different than how we are used to studying in school. The style of learning will be more independent and the interaction with lecturers will be lower. It could be a challenge for the students but it will be a chance for them to adapt to the changes and prepare themselves to continue with their tertiary studies.
