Data is a collection of information normally gathered through numbers or observations to be used for the analysis of trends, user behaviours or disease outbreaks. In a corporation or business, data is often gathered for marketing purposes, financial analysis or to make a better decision for the company. In today’s world, as long as you own a smartphone with different mobile applications, chances are your user experiences and activities are being tracked and stored as data. As the world moves towards digitalization, this data is growing exponentially with time and at a high increase rate, which results in what we referred to as ‘big data’ today. 

Thanks to big data, companies are able to connect with users by offering services or products based on their activity on the Internet such as personalized music, movies and shopping items. However, such massive data requires professionals to parse through them to get the right information. Thus, birthed data science and data analytics as a career that one could pursue as a professional.

What is Data Science?

Data science is an integrative approach to extract key information and insights from large structured or unstructured data. Data science involves data mining, statistics, machine learning and programming to interpret data and present the outcomes or predictions for the decision-making process. The common tasks carried out by data scientists are as the following:

  • Use a wide range of tools and techniques such as SQL, data mining and data integration methods to evaluate and prepare data.

Algorithms help the company to create personalized recommendations for users based on their watched or browsed history.

Data analytics is the process of analyzing existing datasets to draw conclusions for current problems for businesses. The main objective of data analytics is to maximize the efficiency and productivity of a business. Thus, a data analyst is responsible to analyze large sets of data to identify trends develop charts and presentations to help businesses make more strategic decisions.

Analyses records such as monthly revenue, quarterly sales and website traffic to study and spot trend changes.

Diagnostic Analytics

Compares descriptive data sets to identify dependencies and patterns. This helps an organization determine the cause of a positive or negative outcome.

Predictive Analytics

Determines expected outcomes by detecting tendencies in descriptive and diagnostic analytics. This enables an organization to take strategic action such as approaching customers who are unlikely to renew a contract.

Prescriptive Analytics

Prescriptive analytics uses complex algorithms and advanced technology such as machine learning to address potential problems or keep updated on industry trends.

Data science and data analytics may overlap in terms of job roles, the significant differences between them is the job scope. Data science is more of a broader study in mining large datasets, meanwhile, data analytics focus more on a specific version to extract actionable insights that can be executed immediately based on existing data. #1. Aerospace Engineering

Aerospace engineering deals with all aspects of designing and building machines that operate in the air. Air traffic controllers are usually ground-based and communicate with pilots throughout the entire flight, providing information back and forth between incoming and outgoing flights to ensure the safe flow of all flights in the sky and avoiding any sort of collision.

#3. Aircraft Maintenance

Aircraft maintenance is the task required in maintaining the quality of the aircraft which includes ensuring the airworthiness of the aircraft by overhauling, inspection, replacement, defect rectification and the embodiments of modifications. Their roles and responsibilities include the participation in preflight briefings with pilots, conduction of preflight inspections of emergency equipment, demonstrating the use of safety and emergency equipment, ensuring passengers have met safety requirements; serving and selling food and drink; attending to passengers’ needs; reassuring passengers during the flight; administering and coordinating emergency medical care as necessary; and providing directions to passengers, including evacuation orders. 

#7. Civil & Military Aviation

Civil aviation includes all non-military aviation, including private and commercial flying. Passenger, cargo, private and commercial flights fall under civil aviation. However, military aviation is the complete opposition and referees to the use of military aircraft and other flying machines to conduct aerial warfare.

#8. Pilot Training

Pilots fly and navigate aeroplanes, helicopters and other aircraft. Besides the typical becoming an aircraft pilot, you can also consider becoming a helicopter pilot. With this, you can work and be employed by a variety of employers such as the government, tourism companies, offshore support or even under emergency medical services. 

#9. Flight Instruction

Flight instructors for aviation resemble teachers for schools. Flight instructors teach aspiring pilots how to fly using a combination of classroom simulators, and live flight instructions. These real-life simulations aid students in gaining the skills and knowledge needed with the feeling of flying a real plane without actually flying a real plane. 

#10. Aviation Transport

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractors use non-invasive, hands-on, patient-centric manipulation techniques to align the body’s musculoskeletal structure, including joints, muscles and ligaments, the nervous system and most importantly, the spine. It is an alternative treatment to surgery or medication which relieves pain and enables the body to heal itself. 

Chiropractors help people move differently as they assess, treat and prevent pain and disability of the spine and the musculoskeletal system. The majority of the people seeking treatment are looking to relieve back pain, caused by accidents, strains or sports injuries, among other things. Chiropractors also help with complaints of pain in the neck, arms, legs, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, ankles and even headaches.

Job Scope of a Chiropractor

  • Conduct physical examinations on patients
  • Assess and diagnose pain and disability of the spine and the musculoskeletal system
  • Interpret diagnostic images like X-rays and MRIs
  • Manipulate and adjust joints/ soft tissues
  • Provide physical therapy and rehabilitation
  • Give advice on prevention of injuries and general health matters such as exercise, posture and nutrition

Types of Chiropractic Techniques

1. Spinal Manipulation/ Mobilization

A form of manual therapy based on gentle thrusting motions and stretching, used by both chiropractors and physical therapists to restore and improve function in the spinal column and relieve pressure on joints and other extremities.

2. Gonstead Chiropractic Technique

The chiropractor manipulates the lower back and pelvis of the patient while they are lying on their side. When administered, the Gonstead Adjustment can help restore normal disc alignment and maximum mobility.

3. Activator

Chiropractors use a specific activator adjusting instrument to alleviate back pain, neck pain, and pain in the extremities through short, low-force pulses to extremities of the spine.

4. The Thompson Drop Chiropractic Technique

This technique utilizes a specially designed table that can be dropped down by tiny increments, as the practitioner applies quick thrusts, resembling a light vibration to complete the adjustment.

5. Extremity Manipulation

This technique requires physical manipulation of the joints outside of the spine, such as the shoulder, hip, or knee, to be aligned right in order to promote healthy mobility with less stress on the spine.

6. Flexion-Distraction

This technique also requires a unique table that lets the chiropractor manipulate the position of the patient’s spine to remove pressure from the spinal disks and spinal nerves, reducing lower back pains and discomfort.

How to Become a Chiropractor in Australia?

To be a registered Chiropractor in Australia, students need to complete five years of education- a 3-year undergraduate program followed by a 2-year Master/ postgraduate program from an institution that meets the requirements set by the Australian Chiropractic Regulating authority. 

Upon completion of the Master’s program, students will be eligible to apply for registration at the Australian Health Practioner Registration Agency (AHPRA), before they are allowed to practice as a Chiropractor. 

After entering practice, chiropractors are still required to take on professional development courses and seminars to upskill themselves and to stay ahead of the newest research and technology.

What is Animation?

Animation is designing, drawing, making layouts, and preparing photographic sequences that are integrated with multimedia.  Animation involves the exploitation and management of still images to generate the illusion of movement. A person who creates animations is called an animator. Animators use various computer technologies to capture the still images and animate them in the desired sequence.

Types of Animations

Traditional Animation: Traditional animation can also be referred to as cell animation. It requires the animator to draw every single frame by hand to create an animated scene.

2D Animation: 2D animation refers to vector-based animations similar to the ones used in Flash. Vector-based animation gives the artist the option to create rigs for the characters and move single body parts at a time rather than continually redrawing the characters.

3D Animation: 3D animation is also known as computer animation, and it is currently the most commonly used form of animation. 3D animation has less to do with drawing and more to do with moving a character in a program. 

Motion Graphics: This art form focuses on moving graphic elements, shapes, and text. This process is commonly used for things like television promotions, explainer videos, and animated logos. 

Stop Motion: Stop motion animation is very similar to traditional animation because it combines a series of still images that are slightly different to show movement. The largest difference is that stop motion uses photography and captures real objects. The artist repeats this process until the scene is completed and uses each photo as a frame in the animation. It’s similar to a flipbook with photos.

Greatest Animators of All Time

Walter Elias Disney (Walt Disney):  One of the most famous animators globally and is the creator of Mickey Mouse. He was also known for the movie Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, as it was the first full length animated film in the world. 

Hayao Miyazaki: Japan’s most outstanding animator director. He is the co-founder of Studio Ghibli and has produced some of the highest-grossing animated films in Japan. Some of his famous movies are Spirited Away, My Neighbour Totoro and Kiki’s Delivery Service. 

Stephen Hillenburg: Stephen is the creator of the talking sponge, SpongeBob Squarepants. SpongeBob Squarepants, which initially was thought of as a silly idea, has built an empire and is arguably one of the most well known animated cartoons among Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny.

Friz Freleng: Friz worked with Warner Bros and is the co-creator of some iconic cartoons such as Bugs Bunny, Sylvester the Cat and Speedy Gonzales. He also produced the infamous cartoon Pink Panther when the Warner Bros animation centre was shut down. 

Glen Keane:  Glen is a Disney animator that worked on various 2D movies such as The Little Mermaid, Tarzan, Pocahontas and Aladdin. He is skilled in character design and was recognised as a Disney’s Legend in 2013.

Key Skills Needed to Become an Animator

  • Creativity: Being an animator requires constant creativity as they are always needed to think outside of the box and produce new ideas. Having the technical skills will not bring an animator far in the industry as creativity plays an important role.

  • Emotive Communication: Like with any art form, part of an animator’s job is to connect with the viewer through their designs and effects. The goal is to evoke a particular emotion, whether it’s heart-pounding suspense in a blockbuster film or excitement at seeing a brand’s commercial for a new product.

  • Attention to Details:  Animators are required to pay close attention to detail to ensure every piece of a project is working toward achieving its goal, and animation is no exception. Small details like highlights or light movement can be the difference between an average animation and one that captures an audience.

  • Organisational Skills: Animators often work on a team with others, juggling multiple projects and deadlines as they go about their daily work. Animators will often have many files in progress.

Career Options with a Degree in Animation

    • Animator: An animator produces multiple images called frames; when sequenced together, it creates an illusion of movement.

    • VFX (Visual Effects) Artist: VFX artists create photoreal, digitally-generated imagery. The role requires the seamless integration of these effects into live-action in feature films, television and, increasingly, online and console gaming.

    • Multimedia Specialist: As a multimedia specialist, you’ll bring together text, graphics, digital animation, video, photography, audio and virtual reality to create a range of multimedia products that can be delivered on a range of platforms

    • Rigging Artist: Responsible for the construction of rigs for 3D characters, vehicles, props, and develops animation rigging tools. A rigging artist is responsible for creating animation interfaces that meet technical requirements and the project’s artistic vision.

    • Storyboard Artist: Storyboard artists help the head of the story create a visual representation of the animation’s narrative. Storyboard artists translate the script and the director’s vision into pictures. They produce a series of panels of images to plan the shots and ensure continuity between them.

Most of the 7 wonders of the world were built with ancient civil engineers’ help, yes there were engineers way back in time. It could be as simple as the Stonehenge or remarkable as the Taj Mahal, whose construction by pre-industrial societies remains mysterious.

Although the names of the engineers who designed these wonders are lost to antiquity; in this article, we’ll be diving into details on how to become a civil engineer in the 21st century.

What is Civil Engineering?

Civil engineering is one of the oldest branches of engineering. It goes back to when people started living in permanent places without shifting constantly; therefore, they began shaping the environment according to their needs. 

A civil engineer is a professional who oversees construction projects. They are the ones responsible for the complete construction, functionality, and safety of the project. They have to use their education and civil engineering principles to bring designs by architects to life creations. They often have to work with a team of professionals and manage a large number of construction workers. This is quite a responsible job.

Is Civil Engineering and Architecture Similar?

In the construction industry, development projects usually require the knowledge and understanding of a civil engineer and an architect. Both professions have critical functions essential in any construction job, and they rely on one another to accomplish the given task. 

However, these two professions are generally similar, yet there are apparent differences between a civil engineer and an architect. 

 Architecture focuses more on the spatial functionality and aesthetics of the development work. It is more concerned with the look, feel and functionality of the design while civil engineering concentrates on the structural elements of the invention, ensuring that the structure can endure normal and extreme conditions. 

To summarise, an architect’s primary concern is designing the development work while civil engineers are responsible for ensuring that the design can be implemented safely and reliably.

What are the key skills needed for a Civil Engineer?

  • Management Skills: As you progress through your career, you’ll likely be gaining more responsibility as you might eventually end up as a manager of a project or even an entire division. To be successful, you would need to manage different personalities and backgrounds on essential tasks. 

  • Critical Thinking: Civil engineers are often confronted with challenging problems and must devise the most effective and reasonable approach when dealing with them. To do this, they must have the ability to think precisely and apply concepts and rules to a specific problem. 

  • Creative Mind: Thinking outside the box and being creative is essential to develop and implement new projects. 

  • Time Management: Complex constructions require effective time management if you want to hand over the building in time. Bear in mind that in the construction industry, time and budget works hand in hand. The more time it takes, the more money is needed to complete the project. 

  • Problem Solving: Problem-solving is used daily in the construction industry; nothing is plain sailing. You would need to deal with unexpected problems like burst water pipes or delay in material deliveries. 

Roles of Civil Engineers

  • Assess Construction Site: Civil engineers must assess and do a complete feasibility study of the construction site. They have to consider many factors, including the impact on nature, surrounding environment and plan accordingly.

  • Planning the Construction: Plans out the whole construction process beforehand. This has to be a systematic process to facilitate the smooth flow of work. Every step has to be meticulously planned. 

  • Staying in the Budget: If the budget has already been set for the work, the civil engineer must ensure that all the construction work happens within the budget. If the fund has not been set, the engineers will work along with the planner and set the budget and deadlines accordingly.  

  • Supervise the Construction: This is one of the most significant roles of a civil engineer, to oversee the construction. They have to see the building being done in phases set by them and check the quality during the construction.

Career with a Civil Engineering Degree

  • Building Control Surveyor: You’ll make sure that the building regulations are followed when houses, offices and buildings are designed and constructed or when it is altered or extended. If the buildings do not meet the requirement, you’ll be the one advising them and finding a solution. 

  • Computer-Aided Design (CAD) Technician: Uses a CAD software to create technical drawings and plans for products and parts used in the engineering, construction and manufacturing industries. You’ll work with architects and designs engineers to understand their initial designs’ requirements and turn them into accurate and detailed technical drawings in 2D and 3D. 

  • Site Engineer: As a site engineer, your input to construction projects will be technical, organisational and supervisory. You’ll set out and determine the location for infrastructural installations, both above and below ground, and will apply designs and plans to mark out the site.

  • Design Engineer: You’ll be involved in the initial concept, design, development and management of projects in various sectors such as construction and the built environment, software and many more.

  • Sports Journalism: Focus on the subject of athletic news. Sports journalists report scores, standings and rankings for different teams or athletes in various sporting events.
