5 Tips and Tricks To Ace SPM 2022

Sharing is caring :)

The Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) is typically known as the Malaysian national exam taken by all Form 5 secondary school students. It is deemed as the token to obtaining higher education and poses several benefits for students who wish to further their studies if performed well. However, doing well in SPM may not be all that easy without hard work, dedication and most importantly working smart. If you’re in need of tips and tricks as to how you can ace your SPM, here are some of the essential things you can incorporate into your daily studying habits.

#1 Prepare a Study Schedule

Having a clear target each day will help you be consistent when studying on a daily basis and ensures that every topic will be covered before the examination period. Bear in mind that working hard would not bring you the greatest results if there is no consistency. With that being said, let’s look into the steps of creating a study schedule which suits you best.

  1. Create a list of the topics you want to cover for a subject each day and prioritise the ones you are unfamiliar with or find difficult. Then, cross out the topics that
have been covered. A good example would be the planner shown above.
  2. Determine the time of the day where you can concentrate best and study during
    those times.
  3. Most effective study sessions are usually 2 hours long with short breaks in
    between

#2 Understanding Instead of Memorizing

Yes, memorising helps you to remember important concepts and pointers but understanding the materials will not only help you to remember for a long period of time but also helps you solve problems even when certain components of a question are changed. Hence, understanding the topics and materials can assist you in answering High Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) questions in SPM.

#3 Taking Breaks

It can not be denied that studying long hours can be mentally and physically draining for students which can be a setback for the efficacy of your study sessions. Therefore, taking purposeful breaks from studying is imperative as it refreshes your brains, helps increase productivity and ability to focus better.

Though studying comes of an importance to bring good results, your welfare always comes first. Remember to always balance out your schedule that you have set and take some time off to relax your mind. You can try taking a 10 min break after every 40 minutes of studying.

Check this video out for some of the things you can do during your breaks that help boost your productivity!

#4 Using Active Recall

Active recall is the action of actively stimulating your memory for a piece of information. It comprises both memorising and understanding materials and helps consolidate information in your long term memory.

Active recall can be done by using;

  1. Flashcards – Trying to figure out the answer to a question before checking the answers and repeating this process multiple times.
  2. Feynman technique – Best way to learn is to teach it which does not necessarily mean teaching others. You can even explain it to your wall or pretend you are making a video talking about the topic.

Watch the video below to guide you on how you can study effectively with flashcards!

#5 Practice Past Year Papers

Fortunately, SPM is not necessarily unpredictable if you practice and revise past year papers regularly. As the saying goes, practice makes perfect! Revising these papers will help you in various ways which are;

  1. Understanding the format of the paper
  2. Understanding the allocation of marks and marking scheme for each subject. It guides you in determining how much to write for your answer
  3. Completing it within the time frame. Practicing these papers can help you work on your time management that is determining how much time is needed for each  question.

With that being said, all the best in your SPM examinations and always remember that success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.

Failed Your SPM? Here is What’s Next

Sharing is caring :)

Getting your SPM results is one of the most nerve-wracking moments in your teenage years. If your results turn out to be unsatisfying, you may feel like your dreams of pursuing your tertiary education are ruined. Well, no it isn’t.

What are MQA Accredited Programs?

MQA Accredited Programs are programs offered by both public and private universities in Malaysia that are accredited academic programs provided by educational institutions by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA). MQA programs are practices to ensure the quality of Malaysia’s higher education. Generally to get into MQA accredited programs; you would need to meet a minimum requirement of 3C’s for Diploma Programs and 5C’s for Pre-University programs such as A-Levels, Foundation, AUSMAT, SACE and many more.

If you have failed your SPM, you will NOT meet the minimum requirement to gain entry into any public or private universities for MQA Accredited Programs. If you wish to, you would have to retake SPMto fulfill the minimum requirements of either 3C’s or 5Cs.

Don’t want to retake your SPM? Well, we have another option for you to consider!

Have you heard of BTEC programs? Read more to find out everything there is to know about pursuing a BTEC program locally.

What are BTEC programs?

BTEC Programs are known as the “Business and Technology Education Council”. It is an internationally recognized specialized work-related qualification. BTEC Programs have increasingly become popular among students as an alternative to A-Level programs. In comparison to typical tertiary education course structures – BTEC programs are designed in a way where practical learning is incorporated into theoretical learning. BTEC at Levels 1 and 2 are equivalent to GCSEs and Level 3 equivalents to A-Levels whilst Level 4 -7 hold the same levels as a typical Bachelor’s Degree. BTEC programs are assessed mainly via coursework and practical projects.  BTEC Programs are a UK based learning system where you will be provided with two options upon completing the 2 year program: i) you can directly enter the workforce with your diploma OR ii) you can proceed to study abroad for a degree from a recognized university! However, do keep in mind that BTEC Programs are not MQA Accredited!

Benefits of BTEC Programs

1. Vocationally focused

In comparison to typical diploma programs, BTEC programs’ course structure is built in a way where it focuses on vocational training. Hands-on experience and learning from industry leaders increase your chances of employability upon graduation as this form of education can ensure that students develop the skills that the labour markets are looking for.

2. Fast track to employment

BTEC programs are way shorter than most degree courses which will enable students to dive into employment right after graduation. Besides a short time to graduate, BTEC programs are also known to be cheaper than most degree courses. With a BTEC you can become a professional worker, entrepreneur or go to a top university in the United Kingdom to further pursue your Bachelor’s Degree.

Where can you get a BTEC qualification in Malaysia?

YES Academy

YES Academy is a private college (IPTS) registered with Malaysian Ministry of Higher

Education, located in Kuala Lumpur since 1997. Yes Academy is located right in the heart of Kuala Lumpur specifically Megan Avenue II, Jalan Yap Kwan Seng, YES Professional Advancement Center specifically focuses on offering BTEC programs such as Business, Computing and Design.

SPM之后的升学之路

Sharing is caring :)

The SPM results will be out soon in just a couple of weeks.

If your result turns out to be unsatisfying (let’s hope not), it’s okay to let yourself drown in emotions for a while. But when it’s time to get back up, wipe your tears, hold your head up, and take a look at some of the options that you can consider if you have poor SPM results.

If you score 3/less credits in SPM.

#1 Diploma

#2 Vocational education and training (VET)

man-in-beige-blazer-holding-tablet-computer-3184328

There’s always hope for everyone! Even if you score only 0-2 credits and pass BM&Sejarah, vocational education training (VET) can be one of your options to pursue your degree. Vocational training is a program that prepares students with the skills and knowledge needed for entering the world of work. Upon the completion of VET, you will receive a certificate that can be applied for a diploma degree.

Berjaya University offers a TVET (Technical and vocational education and training) on Berjaya TVET College. It offers various areas, such as Pastry Production, Web Development, Digital Marketing, and many more.

Track to a degree: VET -> Diploma -> 2nd year Bachelor

If you need more recommendations for a vocational training schools in Malaysia or overseas, get in touch with one of our education consultants at Excel Education.

#3 Get a certificate

person-holding-white-scroll-2292837

A certificate program acts as a bridge for students to a diploma degree at the same institute. It’s a 16-18 month program. Here are some of the certificate program in Malaysia:

  • APIIT

– Certificate in Administrative Skills
– Certificate in Information & Communication Technology

After you got your certificate, you are able to pursue your diploma in either APU/APIIT.

  • IACT

– Certificate in Communication Studies

After you got your certificate, you are able to pursue your diploma in IACT college.

Track to a degree: Certificate -> Diploma -> 2nd year Bachelor

If you failed the SPM

There are 2 types of failing SPM:

  • Fail in certain subjects asked by a university

Every university has its own requirements regarding its programs/courses. Certain study area requires more subjects than others. For instance, the course Pharmacy usually requires students to not only got credit in both BM and Sejarah, but also an additional credit in Science/Math. And if you did not meet even one of the requirements, they cannot accept your SPM scores.

So one of the moves that we can recommend is to choose another university/course that suits the scores that you got. There are surely plenty of universities/courses out there that have different requirements.

  • Fail BM/Sejarah

Sadly, there is no direct alternative for those who fail either Bahasa Melayu (BM) or Sejarah. Since 2014, you must pass Sejarah and get a minimum of credit in BM. Here we provide some alternatives if you fail BM/Sejarah:

1. Retake the subjects

With a one year gap, you can allow yourself to prepare more and study harder to be able to ace the test next year. It also allows you to learn from your previous mistakes. The gap year also helps you to give yourself a break before directly dive into the university world.

2. Work

If you don’t feel like pursuing higher education, working can be one of the alternatives. There are plenty of jobs that can suit your skills. If you’re more of a creative person, you can work as a graphic designer freelancer or video editor.

On the other hand, if you’re more of a business-mind person, you can work as a salesperson, customer service, or maybe create your own business!

3. Contact us

If you still feel confused or unsure, you can always contact us and consult with our best consultant! We provide 100% FREE consultation for you

After SPM: What’s Next?

Sharing is caring :)

One of your biggest exams, Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia, also known as SPM is done! There are so many things to plan now and might become overwhelming & confusing. 2 essential things that need to be considered thoroughly are the course and the college/university. Here, we provide a handy list of things that hopefully can simplify your options and can find the one that suits you the best!

Finding the right course

There are several aspects that might influence your course choice. Different people may be influenced by different things. So let’s get deeper into it one by one.

1. Know your hobby(ies)

Spent some time to observe what you enjoy to do the most in your spare time. You might find what area you’re interested in better. For instance, if you like to read books related to entrepreneurship and some man’s successful stories, you might be inspired to follow their steps by pursuing a degree in business first.

Another example, if you like to watch law-related tv-shows/movies like Suits, Law and Order, or binge-watching Legally Blonde, you might be interested in pursuing a law degree On the other if you’re more excited with tv-shows related to medicine such as Grey’s Anatomy, The Good Doctor, or Chicago Med, you might probably have an interest into the medical world.

2. Career opportunities

If you are the type of person that likes to plan everything ahead and clearly, you might want to dig in more research on what courses lead to a more rewarding career in the future. In 2020, the Australian Government released the official data for top employing industries which include Healthcare and social assistance, Professional and Scientific Services, and Education and Training.

3. Find something you’re good at

Different than hobbies, which is something that you like to do, other things that can be your consideration is by looking at something that you’re actually good at. Other than being realistic, it can be easier for you to follow the things that you already know the basics beforehand. For example, you’re good at math and dealing with money, maybe accounting can be your course options. Another example, you’re good at listening to other’s problems and can give a really helpful solution, a degree in psychology might be perfect for you.

Finding the right program & university

After you are down with several options of study areas, you are now entitled to choose the perfect programs out of plenty of programs available out there. Knowing the one that suits you the best might be a challenge. That’s why we’re here to give you a rough idea of some of the most popular pre-university programs in Malaysia.
