Diploma or Foundation: Which Program Should You Choose?

Sharing is caring :)

Diploma and foundation are two of the most preferred pathways to university for many SPM leavers. While neither program is better than the other, there are vast differences between the two programs that many students are unaware of.

If you are considering either a diploma course or a foundation program as your pathway to tertiary education, knowing the major differences is crucial, in order to experience an enriching learning experience free of regrets!

What is a Diploma?

A diploma is a qualification or certificate you achieve after completing in-depth classes and hands-on field experience that can help you enter your dream university or equip you with the skills you need to enter into the workforce.

What is a Foundation Program?

A Foundation Program is a study course, originated from the UK, designed to fill the gap between SPM and the level needed to gain entry into a bachelor’s degree program at a university.

Differences between Diploma & Foundation

1. Level of Qualification

  • Diploma

Diploma programs are one level below an undergraduate degree and can be considered equal to the first year of a Bachelor’s Degree. Hence, a Diploma program gets you a higher qualification than a Foundation program,

  • Foundation

A foundation program gets you the same level of qualification as A-levels. It  is a lower qualification than a Diploma. This is however because of the short duration of the course and the subjects or study content covered under this program.

2. Duration of Course

  • Diploma

A Diploma takes longer than a Foundation Program. It can take upto 2-3 years to complete a Diploma. This is one of the major reasons why a Diploma is considered a higher qualification than a Foundation Program.

  • Foundation

A Foundation Program on the other hand, takes a considerably shorter period of time for completion compared to a Diploma. It typically takes only 1 year to complete a Foundation Program. For this reason, foundation is one of the fastest pathways to a Bachelor’s Degree, which appeals to many students.

3. What you will be Studying

  • Diploma

A Diploma is highly focused on industry specific skills in addition to theory, to prepare you for the working world. Most Diploma programs require you to complete an internship period before you can complete the program.

Courses offered in a diploma are very specific and are designed to provide you with an in-depth understanding and practical skills for that specific field. Hence it is important for you to have decided which bachelor’s degree and career you want to go into in the future.

  • Foundation

A Foundation Program offers you a broader course structure compared to a Diploma. Foundation Programs also are however, quite centered around general fields, such as Science or Arts. So for example if you know you want to pursue a course in the science field in the future, but you are unsure about which specific course in the science field you want, a Foundation in Science would be a recommended study pathway for you.

That said, for students who want to pursue a specific course, there are also Foundation programs that are focused on specific courses such as Foundation in IT, Business or Architecture.

4. Study Pathway

  • Diploma

Since a diploma takes a longer time to complete, and offers you more in-depth knowledge and industry specific practical skills, you can enter straight into the second year of a Bachelor’s Degree after completion of a diploma.

You can also enter the workforce straight after graduation, as Diplomas are generally accepted by employers as a minimum level qualification for numerous jobs in every field out there. Hence, a diploma provides you with more options after graduation, compared to a foundation program.

  • Foundation

In Contrast, a foundation program only allows you to progress onto a Bachelor’s Degree. Hence a foundation degree is a recommended option if you want to pursue a career in which having a degree is crucial to enter the workforce, such as psychology, law or medicine.

5. Eligibility for PTPTN Loan

  • Diploma

All MQ Accredited diploma programs are eligible for PTPTN loans. A PTPTN loan is a preferred option by students facing financial constraints but want to continue their studies to achieve their dream careers. You can also apply for a PTPTN loan for your Bachelor’s Degree after completing your diploma.

  • Foundation

Apart from foundation programs from selected universities, a foundation course is not eligible for a PTPTN loan. Hence, for a foundation program, if you have financial constraints, you will have to explore other options such as scholarships.

For more information regarding different diploma options and foundation options you have, contact Excel Education.

Why Should You Choose a Diploma?

Following is a list of reasons why you could consider a Diploma over a Foundation Program.

  • If you are sure about the specific industry you want to pursue
  • If the industry you are interested in requires practical skills
  • If you want to have the option of entering the workforce right after graduation
  • If you have financial constraints and want to apply for a PTPTN loan

For personalised counselling on whether a diploma is the right option for you, contact Excel Education.

Why Should You Choose a Foundation Program?

Following is a list of reasons why you could consider a Foundation Program over a Diploma.

  • If you want a faster pathway to university
  • If you want broader options when you choose your Bachelor’s Degree
  • If your ultimate goal is to get a degree
  • If your future career requires a Bachelor’s Degree to enter the workforce
  • If you are sure the foundation program is recognized by your future university.

If you are still unsure about whether to choose a diploma or a foundation program, or if you want to explore other pre-university program options, do not hesitate to contact us at Excel Education.

Which Foundation Programs to Choose in Malaysia?

Sharing is caring :)

If you have just completed a major exam like SPM or  IGCSE, you’ve just marked the ending of your highschool journey in life. Chances are your mind is clouded with way too many questions like “What’s next?” or “Which Pre-University course should i choose? ” If you’re planning to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree, you would be required to earn a pre-university qualification beforehand to gain entry into the degree of your choice.

What is a Foundation Program?

One of the most common choices of a pre-university qualification is a foundation program. A foundation program is generally a programme that will provide you with the necessary knowledge and skills needed to prepare you for the demands of an undergraduate degree. Courses are broad enough to offer a good introduction to a subject, but they also provide enough depth for you to gain credible vocational skills from expert tutors before progressing into a full degree.

Foundation programs are highly recommended as they :

1. Allows you to explore a variety of subjects in your specific field of interest

Foundation programs of specific fields usually are streamed according to general subjects of the field which allows students pursuing foundation programs to get started on their studies whilst learning about different areas of expertise.  This aids as a guide for students that have an interest in a specific field but are still unsure of which specific speciality to go into. As an example, if you have an interest in Science, a “Foundation of Science” program concentrates on subjects such as physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics and information technology where you can go on to pursue your degree in various science related fields such as medicine, pharmacy, nursing, engineering and even computer science.

2. Allows you to get a feel of the tertiary education life whilst improving your academic skills

A foundation program is known to be a low-commitment step into the world of tertiary education which can be a big change from what you are used to, with independent learning style, addition of assignments and different daily challenges as a whole. General subjects offered for foundation programs allow you to develop the skills needed to succeed in tertiary education such as academic writing, presentation skills, time management and independent research. Taking time to complete a foundation program gives you the opportunity to adjust to tertiary study before committing to a higher level.

3. Cheapest, quickest and easiest pre-university program

A Foundation program is quicker in comparison to other pre-university programmes such as A-Levels and International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma, as it is only 1 year. In sync with it’s duration, it is also a cheaper option. However, prices may vary depending on the university of choice.

Duration & Assessment of Foundation Program

Foundation programs are generally 1 year, studied full time and 1.5 to 2 years studied part time. (50 credit hours, 3 semester, 14 weeks per semester)

After SPM: What’s Next?

Sharing is caring :)

One of your biggest exams, Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia, also known as SPM is done! There are so many things to plan now and might become overwhelming & confusing. 2 essential things that need to be considered thoroughly are the course and the college/university. Here, we provide a handy list of things that hopefully can simplify your options and can find the one that suits you the best!

Finding the right course

There are several aspects that might influence your course choice. Different people may be influenced by different things. So let’s get deeper into it one by one.

1. Know your hobby(ies)

Spent some time to observe what you enjoy to do the most in your spare time. You might find what area you’re interested in better. For instance, if you like to read books related to entrepreneurship and some man’s successful stories, you might be inspired to follow their steps by pursuing a degree in business first.

Another example, if you like to watch law-related tv-shows/movies like Suits, Law and Order, or binge-watching Legally Blonde, you might be interested in pursuing a law degree On the other if you’re more excited with tv-shows related to medicine such as Grey’s Anatomy, The Good Doctor, or Chicago Med, you might probably have an interest into the medical world.

2. Career opportunities

If you are the type of person that likes to plan everything ahead and clearly, you might want to dig in more research on what courses lead to a more rewarding career in the future. In 2020, the Australian Government released the official data for top employing industries which include Healthcare and social assistance, Professional and Scientific Services, and Education and Training.

Which Pre-Uni Should You Choose: Foundation, A-Level, SAM, or AUSMAT?

Sharing is caring :)

What's a Pre-University program?

Choosing the right path of study is crucial for the future. If you have taken your SPM/UEC, the next thing to think about is: what’s next? If your next decision is to pursue a degree, then the next step you are most likely to take is doing a Pre-University program.

A Pre-University program is a preparatory course that aims to provide students with essential skills and knowledge that helps them to handle the challenges of an undergraduate course.

In Malaysia, there are numerous different pre-university programs that are offered by universities and it can surely be challenging to find one that best suits you. It is necessary to spend some time finding out more about each type of pre-university program so that your transition into a bachelor’s degree will be much easier. That’s why here, we’ll help you clarify different pre-university programs such as:

  1. Foundation Program
  2. A-Level
  3. South Australian Matriculation (SAM) and Australian Matriculation (AUSMAT)

and get you a better understanding of each of them!

Foundation Program

What is Foudation?

Certain qualification does not allow students to enter University directly. So, the Foundation program will be the key for the students to enter the University. At the same time, pursuing foundation program helps students to build up their understanding towards the field that they are interested in. For international students, it helps them to improve their English language skills while learning the basics of their field. Foundation Program comes with several benefits.

Benefits of Foundation Program

  • Short Study Duration

Usually, the University foundation program will only take 12 months to be completed. The average price for the Foundation Program in Malaysia is RM 16,000 but it may vary at each university.

  • Opportunity to settle into tertiary studies

Tertiary studies are significantly different than how we are used to studying in school. The style of learning will be more independent and the interaction with lecturers will be lower. It could be a challenge for the students but it will be a chance for them to adapt to the changes and prepare themselves to continue with their tertiary studies.

  • Study area

The Foundation program is short and focused on a particular area of study. It will prepare the students with the basics of their chosen field. Subjects that the students learn in this program will be the fundamental components of their chosen area of study.

What is A-Level?

A-Level, short for ‘Advanced Level’, is a widely recognized pre-university program that is based on the UK education system and is offered in Malaysia. The program can take up to 18 months depending on when you start your studies. It can be said as the “STPM” of UK since both are equivalent to other pre-university programs. Thus, they still have some differences. As A-Level is 100% exam based, STPM consist of school-based assessments (20–40% of final score) plus final exams (60–80% of final score).

In Malaysia, A-Level courses offered are either governed by the Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) or Edexcel examination boards.

The A level subject is divided into two levels: Advanced Subsidiary (AS) and Advanced Two (A2) levels. Each of them contributes 50% of the final grade. The A level programs offer two streams – Science and Arts. It offered various subjects from Biology, Math, Chemistry, Computer Science, Accounting, to Law. You have the freedom to choose the subjects that you want to take. Universities usually required you to take 3-4 subjects only, since it is better for you to focus and concentrate on fewer subjects and then do well on them.

Institutions that receive numerous applicants would be more strict about the deadline and are most likely to overlook late applications.

As we mentioned above, different institutions require different qualifications. One of the most common qualifications is you have to either complete SPM, UEC, or IGCSE test before submitting the scholarship. Luckily, this article will majorly inform you about which scholarships are available for those who took those tests.

What’s Next After SPM? List of Pre-University Programs in Malaysia

Sharing is caring :)

What are Pre-University programs?

Pre-university courses are programmes that allow students to attain the right qualifications to apply to a degree program. There are various kinds of Pre-University programs including

  • STPM
  • Foundation
  • GCE A-levels,
  • Diploma
  • Australian Matriculation
  • Canadian Matriculation
  • American Degree Transfer Programme
  • International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP),

Each Pre-University program has its own benefits and costs, but choosing the correct Pre-University program is vital for every student. In Malaysia, many universities often offer Pre-University programs that allow students to pursue their desired degrees within the same institution or elsewhere. But first, what Pre-University program should you choose?

What to study after SPM?

There are many options to choose from once you complete your SPM. Each Pre-University program is beneficial in a different way for a different academic goal. The illustration below explains the different pathways a student may choose from after their SPM.

Key Points

  • In most cases where students cannot afford to study at a private university is advisable to continue with government-operated high school for their Year 12 or STPM studies. In most cases, students are unable to choose their preferred degree program as it is allocated by the government.
  • Students who are certain that they wish to study abroad but yet to make up their mind on the program and university to study are advised to pursue GCE A-LevelsADP and SAM respectively depending on their strategy.
  • If students are certain on the particular field and university they want to study, it is advisable to join the foundation with the university of their choice. In most case, university priorities their foundation students for placement into degree before accepting students from external pre-university programs. This is great for student targeting Ivy league university or quota based program such as veterinary or medicine.
  • For those wishing to study in a specific country like the USA, it’s best to study their pre-university qualification such as the American Degree Transfer Program (ADP).
