Study Interior Design in Australia (2020)

Sharing is caring :)

What is Interior Design about?

Interior designing combines Art and Science to achieve aesthetically pleasing environments. It focuses on  enhancing the interior of a building, therefore, this profession includes a lot of research, site inspections, programming, space planning, construction management and executing designs.

An Interior Designer is someone who plans, researches and manages such projects. Typically, they work with clients to create aesthetic spaces. Their work can range from a simple indoor/outdoor home environment to designing spaces for offices and hotels.

Interior Design vs Interior Architecture vs Interior Decoration

These titles may seem confusing because they are quite similar to one another. However, there are a few differences between each of them.

  • Interior Architecture – Interior architects focus on the technical and structural aspects of a building. Those in this field would be involved in projects very early on, before the building is constructed.

  • Interior Decoration – Decorators focus on furnishing interior spaces with furniture, paintings, and other accessories. They are concerned with the art side of design and less with science.

Despite the different titles, over the years, many Interior designers have become more involved with architectural and technical aspects of Design. Therefore, many Interior design courses have been renamed as Interior Architecture. As a result, these courses now reflect the structural and technical elements of buildings, which has blurred the line between Interior Design and Interior Architecture.

If you are interested to know more about Interior Design, do not hesitate to get in touch with us.

What skills do you need to become an Interior Designer?

Becoming an Interior designer is not an easy task. It is time consuming and requires a great level of patience. But most importantly, you should pursue this career if you are someone who is passionate about design, is creative and has the ability to think outside the box. Being an interior designer is challenging and it can get very difficult if you are not open-minded and innovative with styles and other trends. Let’s take a look at a few of the other important skills required in order for you to excel in this field :

  • Strong Communication Skills : As a designer you will meet with your clients on a regular basis, therefore, it is essential to communicate effectively and listen attentively. After all, you have to design what they require. In addition, you would have to present your designs, sketches and other material to your clients and communicate with contractors and suppliers to get the material you need.

  • Problem Solving Skills : Projects don’t always go as planned. You are likely to have certain problems along the way. It could be unexpected delays or expenses and changes in renovation ideas. On top of all of that, clients may change their vision which would require you to change interior plans and adapt to certain situations along the way.

  • Creativity : The most part of being successful in this field is to use your creative skills. Interior design is not like staring into a white wall or a blank canvas, it requires you to see what others don’t see or what the space could turn into. It is also necessary for you to keep up with new trends, styles and techniques and apply them to your daily tasks.

Furthermore, Technology is a part of design, more than it was in the past. As an Interior designer, you would have to master Computer-Aided Drawing (CAD), use software’s and 3D plans to present your plans to your clients.

Top reasons to study Nursing in Australia

If you are someone who enjoys making a difference in people’s lives for the better, consider making nursing as a career! Nursing is a highly respected and trusted profession, filled with many opportunities and rewards. The following are a few reasons and benefits of why choosing Nursing as a career might be the most suitable option for you.

  • Growing Demand for Nurses

Nursing is a profession showcasing continuous growth and demand. Healthcare workers have always been welcomed into Australia. As of recent, nurses are particularly in high demand. This is due to the population growth of Australia which has more than doubled over the last 50 years and is expected to continue year on year. This has led to a shortage of skills in the healthcare sector. As a result, the federal government has increased spending on public hospitals, thereby, expanding their health offering as well as building a number of new hospitals.

Therefore, the upcoming hospitals require qualified and skilled staff members which is now driving up the demand for nurses in the country. With the increasing demand, higher wages, benefits and better work environment are to be expected.

  • Nursing is a Diverse Profession

The profession is dynamic and diverse with room to grow professionally. Most people think nurses are constricted to working only in hospitals. However, in addition to hospital nursing there is a variety of practice settings available for nurses : Ambulatory care centers, Public health agencies, independent practice, long-term care facilities and more. Upon receiving a nursing qualification, you can continue to progress professionally in the field. You can start off as an Assistant in Nursing and after you gain enough experience, you could become a Registered nurse, nurse practitioner and there onward aim to become a Nurse Manager. Based on the level of education and qualification obtained, you can pursue a change in the work environment, focus areas, or location.

  • Flexible Working Schedules in Nursing

Nurses have the option of choosing the type of schedule that fits with their life, without losing out on opportunities, job security and pay. Since Nursing is a 24 hour service with rotating shifts, you can choose whether to work at night, day or over the weekends. This is one of the greatest perks enjoyed by nurses around the world. This is extremely appealing to those who aim to pursue higher education in the field, such as advanced degrees or any other additional certification. This will enable nurses to have a flexible scheduling system.

  • Nursing is a Well Respected Profession

Nurses are essential to the health care system as they improve the lives of patients every day. Nursing is seen to be a profession that is ethical, honest and trustworthy as it is required in the field of healthcare. They are the key link between Doctors and patient. It is true that doctors overlook and manage the overall healthcare plan, however, nurses are also there to implement it. Nurses interact with patients the most, therefore, they are in the best position to inform others about the patient’s safety and needs.

Pathway for Malaysians to become Lawyers with a UK Degree

Step 1 : Complete a recognized Pre-University, Diploma or Foundation Course

Students who have completed SPM/IGCSE can proceed to complete Pre-University courses required to obtain a degree in Law. UEC students can directly proceed to a Bachelor’s degree in Law. There are few possible pathways which are recognized by  the Legal Profession Qualifying Board of Malaysia ;

  • A-Level
  • STPM
  • Foundation in Law
  • Diploma in Law
Step 2 : Complete a recognized Law Degree

Upon successful completion of step 1, students can proceed to a Law degree. However, it is important to ensure that the law degree is from an institution recognized by the Legal Profession Qualifying Board of Malaysia in order to gain entry into the legal profession in Malaysia.
Therefore, students who wish to study in the UK are required to obtain degrees from the following bodies or institutions ;

  • Inner Temple
  • Middle Temple
  • Gray’s Inn
  • Lincoln’s Inn
  • The Law Society
  • Solicitors Regulation Authority

In general, there are 2 types of Law degrees that students can pursue :

  •  3 year Law Degree allows students to gain the necessary knowledge and skills about being a qualified lawyer. LLB degrees (Bachelor of Law) are usually 3 year degrees in the UK.
  • 4 year Law Degrees includes an additional year where it provides students professional experience.

Students who have completed a Diploma in Law can proceed to the 2nd year of a Law degree based on the necessary requirements.

Step 3 : Complete CLP or BPTC Law Examination

In order to qualify as a Solicitor or an Advocate in Malaysia, that is, to be a practicing lawyer, a law degree is not sufficient. It is mandatory to complete and pass either the Certificate of Legal Practice (CLP) or Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC).

A. What is Certificate of Legal Practice (CLP)?
CLP is conducted by the Legal Profession Qualifying Board of Malaysia. It is a professional Law exam for those who wish to become practicing lawyers in Malaysia. It consists of 5 compulsory papers.

Entry requirements to qualify for the CLP exams are as follows :

    • Recognized Law degree minimum of 3 academic years and minimum of 12 law subjects with passes in 6 core subjects.
B. What is Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC)?
Students can take the BPTC in the UK instead of CLP examination. This is highly recommended for UEC students due to the requirements by CLP. Those who complete this examination will be admitted as barristers in England and Wales, and as Advocates and Solicitors in Malaysia.
Entry Requirements to apply for BPTC examination
  • Bachelor of Laws with a minimum lower-second class honours
  • Non-English speakers – IELTS 7.5
  • Member of an Inns Court
  • Pass the Bar Code Aptitude Test (BCAT)

Students can learn the BPTC at the following locations in England and Wales :

  • City Law School
  • The University of Law
  • Manchester Metropolitan University
  • The University of Northumbria at Newcastle
  • Nottingham Trent University
  • University of the West of England Bristol
Step 4 : Complete Pupilage (Chambering)

Pupilage, also known as Chambering is a 9 – 12 month period of time where graduates work for a law firm in the form of an internship. This is required to allow graduates to gain experience by working with senior lawyers to comprehend the daily tasks as a solicitor or advocate before being called to the Malaysian Bar where graduates will be admitted and enrolled as official advocates and solicitors.
